Mobile Fidelity SoundLabs, the people behind the recent awesome 180g vinyl reissue of Permanent Waves have confirmed that they will soon also give the same makeover treatment to both Moving Pictures and Signals.

For anyone who hasn't heard of MOFI they reissue from the original master tapes, sourced from the bands and master to 180g at half speed to ensure accurate groove cutting.

Permanent Waves sounds incredible - with detail way beyond that of the original vinyl press and much better than the CD remaster. If Moving Pictures and Signals sound as good it will be a rare treat and the best treatment of Rush's 'peak of their powers' trilogy. They're expensive at approx £25 each but definitely worth it.

Here's MOFI's blurb about themselves:
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's ongoing quest is to deliver the foremost sounding audio entertainment software that technological innovation can provide. From our first UHQR™ vinyl LP to our latest Ultradisc UHR™ SACD, we have been and will remain a steadfast innovator in the audiophile frontier. We further believe that technological development serves best when accompanied by a profound awareness and appreciation for the elusive magic and mystery that comprises music itself. Our greatest hope is that our products will serve as conduits for ears ands souls to experience premium, pure, natural sound reproduction of diverse, pre-eminent original master recordings across the entire musical spectrum.

Mobile Fidelity believes that mastering systems should be neutral and transparent. The essential idea is to unveil all the detailed musical information on the original master recording without adding deterioration, coloration or other sonic artifacts.

It is worth noting that Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab stands out as one of few record labels that independently invests in research and development of audio technology. With proprietary innovations such as GAIN 2™, general music enthusiasts and audiophiles alike have reaped the benefit of a higher consumer audio standard without investing in costly new hardware. Mobile Fidelity is pleased to work with a variety of engineering legends and companies including Tim de Paravicini, Ed Meitner, Pass Labs, Theta Digital and Sony Electronics. Our joint efforts to seek out the ultimate audio experience, has resulted in significant advances for the technology of music reproduction.

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab has been the undisputed pioneer and leader in audiophile recordings since the company's inception in 1977. Established by dedicated audiophiles, Mobile Fidelity's first and foremost goal was to offer faithfully reproduced high fidelity recordings that would compliment the numerous advances occurring in audio delivery systems. Throughout its history, Mobile Fidelity has remained true to this goal, pioneering state-of-the-art technologies and setting audiophile standards that remain in place today.

In response to rapid advancements in both recording formats and audio delivery systems over the past several years, Mobile Fidelity has maintained its ongoing commitment to improving industry standards. This has resulted in the introduction of numerous innovations in the audiophile arena: half-speed mastered Original Master Recording™ LPs, Ultra High Quality Records™ (UHQRs), high fidelity cassettes, consumer alignment devices for phono cartridges and audio cassette decks, Original Master Recording™ compact discs, the 24-karat gold plated Ultradisc™ CD and the Ultradisc™ Ultra High Resolution™ (UHR). To this day the independently owned firm continues its commitment to exceeding industry standards.

VERY NICE!!!
Though I have all on Vinyl up to . . . Hold Your Fire? And rare EP's too (Missed my chances
to get the rare Japanese "Virgin Vinyl" collection in the 80's and, Roll the Bones, Counterparts
and Flashback . . . THEY WERE IN MY HANDS!!!! <hits head on monitor>) Cry

I have 3 different Moving Picture albums, my fave is the one printed on a very thin Cardboard,
but the cover was glossy stock and the original "Red Border" around the front Pic.
And the "moving pictures" of the 3 playing their instruments on the Lyric/Sleeve . . . I wish I had
that huge promo poster that was released of that image Big%20smile Great pic!

No $10k deck but a modded LP12 and modded RB300 arm. I can tell you that the MOFI Permanent Waves knocks spots off the original even on a middling system like mine. The treble is smoother, but still more defined and the low notes, dear lord! they thunder through the speakers like nothing i've ever heard. I've been listening to Permanent Waves since the day it was released, on cassette, LP and CD, and this MOFI pressing pees all over every other format version I've had. Can't wait to get Moving Pictures and Signals. They are worth it, honest, but you do need a decent deck, arm, cart, phono stage, amp and speakers I'm afraid.

Well, I recently purchased the Metallica - Ride the Lightning remaster (also by mobile fidelity) and it sounds horrible. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the one disc I purchased or a general problem though.

For me . . .
Its just for my collection, I still collect Vinyl (especially EP's) for Rainbow, Yes and Rush.
By the way MikeEn, back in the 80's at a Heavy Metal Store, I held in my hand about
"20"(!!!) copies of the "Green Tinted" Metallica-Ride the Lightning Lp's . . .
and didn't even BUY one Cry
