Hi 
 
Firstly I want to say.... if this thread has been done before I apologize and if itīs in the wrong forum I apologize as well (a moderator can certainly move it somewhere else).
 
I was wondering what have been the top studio albums throughout the existence of the 100 Top List.   I īve been looking at this site for a few years and I remember only
 
 
Anymore you remember dear old PA fanatics?
 
p.s. when was PA founded? I canīt see it in the "about" section,  I think maybe I read somewhere it started in ī98 (maybe Iīm remembering incorrectly or my mind is playing tricks on me)

    Maybe Foxtrot, DSOTM and ITCOTCK have been in no.1 but not sure...

    When I received Prog Lucky his book as a promo from him I was astonished that ELP was not on the cover, I complained about that but now I notice that ELP is a kind of second division band, even the ELP inspired Le Orme has a better position in the Prog Archives Album Top 100, is this a Canadian conspiracy against ELP here on Prog Archives, where is their stunning eponymous debut album, where is the exciting Pictures At An Exhibition and where is the best live triple album Welcome Back ... Shocked ?

    The Top List as we know it (albums, not bands) seems to have started 
    on the 25th of June in 2004  ,  a top 15 list dominated by various albums by Dream Theater, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson & Pink Floyd.  (Nr. 1 was DREAM THEATER -Train Of Thought that you guys have said to have now disappeared from planet top prog)
     
    On the 29th of June in 2004
      the list was expanded into a top 20 list.   (Nr. 1 was Genesis - Foxtrot)
     
    On the 6th of July 2004 the the list has 50 albums. (Genesis - Foxtrot still nr.1)
     
    On the 14th of February 2005  the list has 100 albums and Yes - Close to the edge is nr. 1
    Nobody needs to go anywhere else. We are all, if we only knew it, already there.

    Nice to see Train of Thought that high, I considered that a staple for prog-metal bands instead of scenes. Wrong discussion anyway .

    The algorithm used to calculate popularity has changed a number of times. The number of reviews is now far less important, which I find odd. Also many people delight in ambushing 'popular' albums - check out the number of 1-star reviews of Train of Thought. It's not a top 10 album in terms of quality, but I bet it's one of the ten most owned albums by all members of this archive.

    Ah well. It's only a tool, not gospel. Fun to look back and see how things have changed.

    Interesting.   Yeah I also would like the number of reviews to have a bit more weight than it does,   a band w. 20 ratings can knock out a band w. 200-300 reviews it seems

    I remember when I first wandered aound PA several years ago, Dream Theater were easily in the top 3 or 4 bands...ahead of King Crimson, Genesis, and Pink FloydShocked.  At that time I had no idea who they were but I thought if they were "better" than Pink Floyd I'd have to try them out....took a few listens to Scenes Pt. II and Images and Words, and actually liked them but for some reason never went any further....too busy buying Yes and Genesis albums and trying to find that other strange band appearing on the lists (Anglagard)....damnit I still haven't found any of their stuffLOL

    Well i remeber Close to the edge being in n1 for the longest period competing with SEBTP wich poped in on n1 for a day or 2 sometimes. IMO CTTE was a very good choise for n1.

    Yeh I can't find any Gabriel Genesis CDs in any UK Store first hand. I ended up getting Nursery, Foxtrot & Selling England on the Amazon Marketplace. Genesis OFFICIAL website has a picture of the foxtrot figure but doesnt sell the album..

    Think Phil Collins had something to do with that Wink

    Anglagard's albums have been out of print for some time so the only way to get a legitimate copy is to buy an (often highly-priced) used version, which seem to show up on eBay periodically.  Yes I think that most people download or share mp3's to substitute for this...as for myself, I don't have either album in any format, prog radio will have to do for me...they pop up on some stations from time to time. 
     
    There have been rumours, though, of a reissue in the near future...
