Topic: Searches Posted: June 26 2007 at 03:30 |
I understand searches inbody of text was removed because it was just too thirsty with such a massive archive, but what has happened is that unless I remember the name of a thread (tricky- head like a sieve....... also people keep changing thread names... why DO they do that?) you simply have no chance of finding something.
I am reluctant to start a new thread if I think there has been a thread running already (for fear of getting lampooned) and if I can't find the subject I simply give up and go elsewhere.
Is this what we want? Is this a good thing? Maybe I should be paranoid?
Can we sort out the search thingy? IS it possible? Or if not, can we just be a bit nicer when folk re-start a topic that is difficult to find?
Can we work something out?

The current search facility *sucks* ... it has more features than the old one, but simply doesn't work properly. What's really annoying is that when you perform a search and you'd like to modify the text you'll have to enter it all again ... and if you're too quick then the next search will result in a "please wait 20 secs" message, which means that you have to go back and - guess what - enter the text again, select the proper category, select "display result as topics" etc .etc. ...
In short:
IT SUCKS GIANT MONKEY BALLS!

The forum body text search thingy used to time out most of the time anyway. I think it gives up when it has to search through the VR.
Have you tried using the google search on the home page?

The Google search is not very reliable. Usually it finds the relevant pages, but if it doesn't find what you're searching for there's no guarantee that it doesn't exist. This is especially the case for newer entries (it takes up to two months for new pages to show up in the Google index).

I would like the "Message Body" function to get back, I used a lot and it was highly helpful. Now it's hopeless to find deep message and specific discussions, terms or such, without knowing exactly what the topic title is, who made, when or how it made (or such).

The message body function uses too much server resource to reinstate it I'm afraid. If we put it back up, the rest of the site would be unacceptably slow.
