First of all, Welcome!

Second, the Prog-Metal Team is currently duscussing Mastodon for inclusion. they have 4 votes in favour and 3 against. You can see this in www.ratingfreak.com and click on PA in the upper right corner and you'll see the prog-metal bands under discussion (and also the Neo-prog and the RIO/Avant bands as well).

I think they are prog-metal. New album 9/12, unfortunately The Mars Volta's album coems out then too. Needless to say, I'll buy it, but won't be listening to it for a little while.

Mastodon are a controversial addition for our Team, as the opinions are divided on two halves, pretty much. We plan to make the final verdict once everyone has heard the latest album, which hasn't even come out legally yet.

If I may ask, what are some of the common sentiments against including them?

I hope nobody screams at me if I just copy and paste my post on it from the Collabs Zone:

The argument for Mastodon's inclusion was:

1) Death/Voivod influenced riffing and structure.
2) Jazz drumming.
3) They have epics, mellow parts, but not that often.

The argument against Mastodon's inclusion was:

1) Not even arguments for their inclusion.
2) Verse structures

also

Almost forgot the main one:

0/4: Mastodon's music goes into the same sub-genre as the Neurisican, all three of which are already in the archives. Metal-Archives, known for their cheesy, yet precise definitions of bands' genres(I never understood why Tool was Nu-Metal by their definitions though, but in this case they are right:), classified Mastodon as Progressive Sludge. If you listen to the last album, you will find out that it sounds like later era Death and Enslaved(or is that because Enslaved are Isis influenced too? :P)more than, say, The Melvins.

I am one of the people _for_ it, by the way.

Thanks, I'm actually on the fence about the issue myself, but I've only heard one album, Leviathon, so I probably need to hear some more before I reach a decision. I was jsut very interested in what the prog-metal team thought, thanks for providing it.

I woudnt consider Mastodon as prog metal and I think it is a big mistake.
I heard them on one occasion live, opening for Slayer and they played about 5 songs and each songs sounded alike, very repetitive, not prog at all, only one thrashy riff impressed me... A song named "Mother Puncher".
