             I can't find any mention of the flute on any of his solo albums...   Did he give it up when he left Genesis?

He plays flute on some of his solo albums. I just can't recall which.

EDIT: I made a quick search and he is given credit for flute in Peter Gabriel 1, Birdy and Passion.

is there flute on So? or is it keyboards?  I remember during the solo part of sledgehammer a flute like noise, but I'm not sure.
