You may disagree about it being prog, but I think Asia's 'Aura' is one hell of an album! As is 'Arena' and 'Silent Nation', but I guess that's all too commercial and the songs are too short for most proggers' liking. But somehow I have a feeling that a lot of the latter grudgingly have to admit to themselves - in the privacy of their own inner thoughts - that (some / a lot of) the stuff they talk down and discard as being crap is actually f***ing great! The same goes - IMHO - for Genesis' 'Calling All Stations', Saga's 'Generation 13', Camel's 'Stationary Traveller', Rush's 'Signals' and 'Grace Under Pressure', Genesis' 'Duke' and Pink Floyd's 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason'. But then again, I might be wrong ... There may even be more instances of misplaced nostalgia for the 20 min +, pre '73 musical ramblings displaying un-songlike characteristics than I thought! Let's be clear about this: I appreciate good music, music that speaks to and touches me, whether it comes in the form of a 25 minute suite from '69, a commercial 3 min song from 2004 or an idiosyncratic Tibetan yak-herding tune. I thought that was what music and its appreciation was all about. All this, just to say that some of the reviews of artists and their albums in this MAGNIFICENT site are misguidedly way over the top and ludicrous. (A fellow Belgian reviewer springs to mind )

Oh, because your review is obviously the definitive opinion on this album. Now that I've read it, I must instantly change my opinion.
It's true that Asia could have been a lot better given the talent their lineup featured, but their self-titled album is an enjoyable slice of pop-rock which blows stuff like 90125 and Abacab out of the water.

I for one enjoy ALL of Asia's output ...it seems no matter what the production on every one of their albums is magnificently done...

The early albums are excellent.Asia filled a period when 'classic rock' was off the agenda and helped show that there were some old progsters that could still cut the mustard. However I think that people only bought their albums because Steve Howe and Carl Palmer were in the line up.The music could never touch the former glories of their ex bands. But i will give Geoff Downes credit for keeping it going long past it's apparent sell by date.Aura is indeed a good album although it still gets filed under 'AOR' in my book and has little or nothing to do with prog.

I'd love to pick up some of Asia's 90s material, I have heard that its
a little more interesting than their 80's stuff, even though I do like
the classic self-titled one
and btw, Rush's Signals and GUP are fantastic albums!!! I
have to admire as well that Rush decided to go somewhere else away from
Moving Pictures after they released that album, whereas the could've
just made Moving Pictures part 2 to make money.
sorry, don't mean to change the discussion what that.
