In Absentia,Lightbulb Sun,Stupid Dream & Deadwing are all top notch albums and I think if you like one you'll love them all. Signify is a good album but whilst it was the first PT album I heard and loved it at the time,I cant help preferring the later stuff. The Sky Moves Sideways is a great album too,but very different to the later stuff. The tracks are much longer and spacier and you could easily like this period of PT and hate the later stuff and visa-versa. I think that everything from 1994 onwards is very strong and why they aren't packing out the arenas is a mystery to me. Wonderful band and highly recommended to anyone who likes their Prog Rock to rock..... |

Deadwing, no doubt... but there is a lot of great heavy songs at "Lightbulb Sun", "Stupid Dream" and even "Sky moves Sideways" (very pinkfloydian but there's some great stuff on "Dislocated Day" and "Sky Moves...")... But if you are looking something heavy with raw guitars and that stuff, PT maybe isn't the right choice... But WHAT A BAND!! |

You ought to experience Deadwing, in agreement with other opinions, as
the album is relatively closer to appeal into a budding sense of taste,
in specialty to approach a heavier side of prog, I believe. Evolving
into the discography, you should consider delving into Lightbulb Sun,
which is yet another album (excuse me: great album) accessible to those
developing a fondness, I guess. Afterwards, amaze yourself at a
completely different scenery provided by Signify, then pursue for some
earlier albums to establish comparison (if you become interested in the
aquaintance, of course). Should you happen to encounter Coma Divine, in
a record store, under the circumstances displayed in brackets, be sure
to purchase it, as it's an outstanding (not to mention pleasantly
surprising) live performance, coming to depict veracity into the
analogy with live gigs as artful playground for musicians.

My own personal favourites are In Absentia (IMO their most complete
album), Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun and The Sky Moves Sideways. I find
Stupid Dream has a few gems but seems transitional and lacks focus and
confidence. Signify too is patchy, it has the wonderful Dark Matter
(one of their finest) and the excellent Every Home is Wired but there's
a lot of aimless filler, again it feels directionless. Sky Moves
Sideways is a surprisingly good album, the fullest realisation of the
band's spaciness. There are sundry other excellent tracks scattered
across a variety of releases and perhaps the best way to go is to get
Deadwing and In Absentia and then perhaps the Stars Die: The Delirium
Years compilation. There's great stuff on there from the first period
of PT. Recordings has some cool stuff too like Buying New Soul. Funny
but even the b-sides are often great, the two tracks on the Lazarus
single from Deadwing, So Called Friend and the gorgeously mellow Half
Light are well worth seeking out. It's also worth giving a listen to
the Blackfield album, which is a real grower.

You should check out Deadwing and Lightbulb Sun. If you want to listen to early Porcupine Tree I would advise you to get Coma Divine: Live in Rome its one of my favorite live albums. The only bad part about it is i heard that steve wilson re-recorded his vocals on the live album, and re-released in a digipak jewel case in 2000. It's stilla great live record though |

I find it funny. I am a fairly new fan of the band, but I discovered them backwards from the way people are discovering them these days(In Absentia or Deadwing). I downloaded 'The Sky Moves Sideways' and 'Coma Divine' one day, and found it to be pretty interesting. The next day I found a copy of 'Up The Downstair', and that album hooked me for some reason. Funny it's not been mentioned yet, as it is a great album. One of my favorites, and a wonderfull addition to my CD collection. After spending the last six to seven months diving into the world of Porcupine Tree, I find my favorites are Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, Up the Downstair, and Deadwing. Really though, you can't go wrong with any of Porcupine Tree's albums. I also recomend Steve Wilson's side project Blackfield. The self titled album is dark, mellow, and gloomy, but really well done in my opinion. It's not a heavy riff fest or anything of that sort though, but it makes for a great rainy day album. A new album is expected sometime this year I believe.

yes if you like kind of experimental trance spacey stuff you'll love it. i personally think there is no such thing as a PT album thats not worth it. I own every one except for the singles. LONG LIVE PORCUPINE TREE! Edited by lightbulb_son |

I recently got "Sky" and it's absolutely amazing! There's a really cool heavy song on it - "Dislocated Day", but the album is basically very spacy, trippy, mellow, atmospheric.... very Floyd, haha. I feel like it's the Wish You Were Here album of Porcupine Tree. |

as what I heard (not all albums), I'd said that there's at least two incarnations oif Procupine Tree. first, Floyd-like. then it's Staircase Infinities, The Sky Moves Sideways (huh, I thought of Wish You were Here too), Metanoia and so on. second is more MTV-like song-oriented rock/grunge, but newerthless pretty good. these are In Absentia, Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun and Recordings (not sure, is it a collection or album). |

yes, I know, my English is far from perfect. I comfortable with it.

Everything they've done is brilliant, but IMO, In Absentia and Deadwing are their weakest albums(they're not bad, mind you, but just not as good as the rest of their catalogue). I'd have to agree with Stupid Dream, Signify and The Sky Moves Sideways as albums to check out next.. but even On The Sunday Of Life and Voyage 34 are great albums in their own right. |

The Sky moves sideways still remains my favourite... actually I am more of a fan of their 'old' era than the newer stuff... but I don't think they have a single album that I dislike!
Deadwing is also an album that continues the path that PT followed with In Absentia, although it is more ambient and atmospheric.

Well if you like the heavy stuff then absolutely Deadwing. However some of their other albums such as Signify have a few heavy songs but besides Signify, In Absentia, and Deadwing the rest is quite mellow, spacy and airy. They are more on the ambient and light side early on with lots of sounds happening in the background of the actual music. but don't get me wrong all of their albums are amazing and no 2 albums sound alike. Deadwing and In Absentia are the 2 that sound the most alike, just because of the style of songs that are on each album.

The Sky Moves Sideways for sure. Voayge 34 isn't too shabby either. But The Sky is in my Top 5 Space-Rock albums. Simply amazing.
