Definitely one of the 10 greatest record sleeves ever produced.

I really like the sleeve of Lizard too.

Indeed - Yes and KC had some of the best album art around. I refer you to an example of Yes art:

Actually they both still have great art work for their album covers - though dissimilar artists producing the work

FYI

Yes's debut album was released during the warm heights of summer - July, 1969.
KC's In the Court was released in the cold autumn - Oct., 1969.

Season-wise it seems appropriate time for both releases.

Great thread, and interesting thoughts.

I definitely agree.

Both bands so different, yet loved and respected by progressive fans all over the world.

i guess overall, crimson is the better band if you look at the entire career, but they never wrote a song even close to as good as Gates of Delirium, Close to the Edge, or Awaken

no reason for me to mention that in this thread, but i did

It would be interesting to hear Yes do a cover of Starless
and KC do a cover of  Awaken.

Don't know if Jon A. could pull it off or
if Robert F. could sound so uplifted.

"Dinosaur". Great tune, and great lyrics with a wink.

The mark of a great band; when you're confident enough to make fun of yourself.

Don't think Jon Anderson ever poked fun at himself for having pretentious lyrics.
I actually think he feels like he's God preaching in 'Awaken', where KC's Court of the
Crimson King obviously emanates from some lower region of the netherworlds. Wink

Actually, Jon Anderson did poke fun at himself once!  In "Going for the One" he sings:

"Now the verses I've sang
Don't add much weight to the story in my head
So I'm thinking I should go and write a punch line
But they're so hard to find
In my cosmic mind
So I think I'll take a look out of the window"

With all due respect, that is a ridiculous statement.  It proves that you might have heard Crimson, but you've never really listened.

Every single KC album has at least one track (if not several) that are the equal of the tremendous Yes pieces you mention.  To whit:

21st Century Schizoid Man
In the Wake of Poseidon
Cirkus
Sailor's Tale
Exiles
Trio
Starless
The Sheltering Sky
Waiting Man
Three of a Perfect Pair

That's just one track from the first 10 KC records, just as an example.   Come to think of it, that's a nice mixtape if you wanted to make it.

Seriously, the idea of polar oppsites isn't correct concering KC and Yes, even if you're only referring to Prog.

In the title track of Going For The One he does exactly that:

"Now there verses I've sung don't add much weight/To the story in my head/So I think I'd better go and write a punchline

But they're so hard to find in my cosmic mind.... "

Just noticed Harm S made exactly the same point a few posts back...

Yes' quality went down terribly during the 80's though, whereas Crimso's didn't really.

I bought most Crimso 80's lp's in the bargain bins at Woolworths and that's were they belong!

I think real prog polar opposites, the vocalists

Richard Sinclair (Caravan, Hatfield)

vs.

Peter Hammill (VdGG)

could they be any more different?

You dismissed all KC songs as universally inferior to those of a band who last pushed a musical boundary in the mid-1970s, and whose original drummer gave up millions of dollars, fame and security to go with KC, who haven't stopped pushing them to this very day.

What you meant to say was, "I really like the sunny, diatonic, positive vibes of The Affirmatives and I can't stand the depressing, wigged-out, atavistically-inclined Crimso."

Sorry if I insulted your ears.

Hugs!
