Topic: Angelo Branduardi Posted: February 28 2006 at 11:26 |

Angelo Branduardi's "Alla Fiera Dell'Est" (1976) was the second Italian record I ever bought after "Felona E Sorona". I was in Italy in 1976 and saw a great concert at Italian TV. I noted the name of the artist and the next day I went to a record shop and Branduardi had just released his second record ( his first on Polydor) with a beautiful gatefold cover and beautiful fotos inside. Now It is Prog? The italian website Italian.prog has listed him and I agree for his first 2 records. Branduardi was among the first European musicians, who mixed classical music and Pop with World elements (use of Sitar and Bouzouki). Some of the longer tracks like 'Il Funerale' create elaborated athmospheres with the help of Banco keyboarder Vittorio Nocenzi.(BTW Branduardi would record a live record with Banco) Nevermind if it's Prog or not "Alla Fiera Dell 'Est" is a beautiful record.

Many (almost all, really ) italian artists of that period made some progressive albums.
Branduardi is and always has been a singer-songwriter who tried to reach highest peaks of melodic art also by re-interpreting medieval music! He's one of the heroes of italian music of the seventies!!
And he's still doing things even today!
Alla Fiera dell'Est is his most known song! Everyone here in Italy knows it word by word!!

Maybe Andrea can tell the story line:

It's a sort of carol.
At the East's Fair
for two pennies
a little mouse my father bought.
And came the cat
who eat the mouse
that at the market my father bought (repeated twice).

I own Angelo's triple Concerto album and I think he's a very good musician! To be honest, I like him best at his "progressive" moments.

Angelo Branduardi is a good artist but "Alla fiera dell'Est" is a boring song. There are better songs, I heard some good, even by the recent albums.

The song "Alla fiera dell'Est" actually is not an origilnal Branduardi's song but an elaboration of a traditional Hebrew Eastern song... Anyway the album "Alla fiera dell'Est" is along with "Gulliver la luna e altri disegni" Lla pulce d'acqua" and "Cogli la prima mela" one of his best works...

Completely agree with you Andrea. This song is really famous and nice.
Anyway Branduardi's first two albums,"Angelo Branduardi" (1974) and "La Luna", can surely be considered progressive. The first one displays great music passages that most groups could envy him, songs like "Il Tempo Che Verrà" and "Eppure Chiedilo Agli Uccelli" are really good.
