Martin Vengadesan & The Stalemate Factor is a Malaysian rock band that plays folk-rock, psych-rock and symphonic prog. It has recorded and released four albums, based loosely on a chess theme, since 2018.

The albums are:

The Queen's Gambit (2018)
The Bishop's Sacrifice (2019)
The Knight's Flight (2020)
The Rook's Siege (2023)

The basis for inclusion would be lengthy progressive songs such as The Horizon Myth (12 minutes long), Your Runaway Mind (Syd Barrett, Peter Green & Me), Across The Moors and The Battle Of Emerald Skye, a 23-minute suite including sitar and Moog solos.

Its music is available here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4lgiYypAIHBk2q4NxC480n

FYI, it is listed on ProgGnosis as a Contemporary Psych (Prog) band. https://www.proggnosis.com/Artist/16514

Note: Martin Vengadesan is former PA admin Trotsky and also use to play in a long defunct Malaysian band called Samarkand that also played some progressive rock.

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

Suggested bio for consideration

Martin Vengadesan & The Stalemate Factor is a Malaysian rock band that has released four albums in the folk-rock, progressive rock and psychedelic rock genres. The band is also noted for the strong left-wing political stance of its lyrics.

In 2018, the first Stalemate Factor album The Queen’s Gambit was released. The core band was Vengadesan on lead vocals, acoustic guitar and keyboards alongside drummer Andrew Sagayam and bass player Hisham Zulkifli.

Its music is largely folk-based with compositions that tend to be about personal tales.

The second album The Bishop’s Sacrifice came out in 2019. It contained some hard rock with songs that are largely about politics, philosophy or religion. It is notable for the 23-minute long progressive rock epic The Battle Of Emerald Skye.

The main band was Vengadesan on vocals/bass/keyboards, Joshua Rayan on electric guitar and Sagayam on drums.

During the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, Vengadesan recorded the psychedelic third album The Knight’s Flight with the help of N Rama Lohan (guitars/vocals), Edward Gomez (bass/vocals), Sagayam (drums) and Joanne Timbuong (backing vocals).

The fourth Stalemate Factor album, titled The Rook’s Siege, came out in May 2023. It featured the sympohonic prog song The Horizon Myth which showed the influences of Traffic, Rush and King Crimson. The core band included Vengadesan, guitarist Wong Lip Kee and producer Ashwin Gobinath on drums.

Malay prog. At long last! Another unpopular country to join the PA roster. Cool!
