It has been mentioned in the RIP thread, but I think ex-Renaissance bassist Jon Camp, who passed away on December 13 aged 75, deserves his own thread. The bass work was always an elementary and unique element in Renaissance's music, and Jon Camp belongs to the bassists I treasure most. May he rest in peace!
Here's a 30 minutes live version of Ashes Are Burning. (Think of the solo what you want, he is a genius bassist and deserves to be listened to in full splendour.) |

yes, absolutely... I'm a big fan of Renaissance and was very sad when I read this... a stalwart of the band throughout their glorious run of albums in the 70's, we have much to thank him for...
may he RIP.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

^ I recall Jon Camp saying Time-Line was the best Renaissance album of all time, although that may have been because he produced it.

Thats sad news, he was a great bassist, another fine exponent of the Rick and essential to the classic Renaissance sound. RIP Jon.

Sad news indeed, his basswork was the rock foundation of the Renaissance sound. The only ones left from the classic era are Annie and drummer Terence Sullivan now.

Very sad indeed - I'm waiting to see if Annie posts anything on her Facebook page.

RIP of course Ashes are Burning (the track and the akbum) is the second line-up'd best moment, IMHO.
I don't know if Cenamo was a better bassist (probably not), but Camp & Tout owe everything to what Luois and John Hawken did in the MkI line-up. that bass doubling the piano is definitely the Renaissance trademark. Edited by Sean Trane - December 19 2024 at 16:24 |

Jon was one of the 1970s masters of the Rickenbacker bass guitar, along with Chris Squire, Michael Rutherford, Gary Strater (Starcastle) and Ray Bennett (Flash). He was a big influence on my own style on the instrument.
Thank you for starting this thread, he certainly deserved it. RIP Jon.

^Thanks a lot! I always hoped that he'd play bass for Renaissance once more. They seem to have fallen out at some point, but maybe they had no hard feelings against each other anymore in the end? It wasn't to be.

Hi, The far out thing in all this is the audience clapping along with the bass solo ... that is rare, and truly special!
