In a recent poll, the OP made the bold assumption that "Supper's Ready" would be almost everyone's favourite track on Genesis - Foxtrot. But, a number of people disagreed.

Quite often the epic track of an album is the one that people tend to prefer. Personally, I find it difficult to say that I prefer some short track over a much longer track, regardless of how fond I am of the short track. For example, I love "Infinite Space (Conclusion)" from ELP - Tarkus, but nevertheless can't say I prefer this to the title track, even though this is my favourite three minutes twenty seconds on the entire album. On the other hand, I have no qualms about saying that I prefer "A Place to Survive" to "Meurglys III (The Songwriters Guild)" from Van der Graaf Generator - World Record.

What tracks from albums containing epic tracks do you prefer over the epic tracks?

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

On "Dog" by Mike Keneally Band, I prefer "Pride Is A Sin" over the epic " This Tastes Like A Hotel".

I share your opinion about VDGG's World record.
This song was unnecessarily extended and lost its very good start.
From Foxtrot Watcher (one oe the best intro ever) was a long time favorite together with Can-utility ( a gem)
From Nursery Cryme I like 7 Stones and Salmacis a little more than MB or GH the battlehorses of the album.
From Trespass, he Knife will remain iconic (thanks to the powerful live version with Phil on drums) but I always preferred Stagnation and White Mountain (The live version of the 1976 tour is in my opinion weaker, Phil did not match with the original Peter haunting vocals)
to be continued ....

I prefer "Wonderous Stories" to "Awaken", and "After the Ordeal" to "The Battle of Epping Forest"
The Wheel of Time Turns, and Ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the shadow.

IQ: The Enemy Smacks over The Last Human Gateway (Tales from the Lush Attic)
Big Big Train: Experimental Gentlemen over A Mead Hall in Winter (Grimspound)
Magma: Hhaï over Retrovision (Retrospektïw III)

Yes' Sound chaser is a real challenger to Gates of Delirium (one of my timeless LPs)

And You And I > Close To The Edge
Everything else on Banks Of Eden > Numbers
Parallels > Awaken
Through The Corridors > The Last Human Gateway
Blood On The Rooftops > One For The Vine
(I like all these epics though)

Renaissance - Scheherazade and Other Stories: Trip to the Fair, Vultures Fly High
Nightwish - Endless Forms Most Beautiful: Elan, Shudder Before the Beautiful, Yours is an Empty Hope, Weak Fantasy
Rush - Hemispheres: La Villa Strangiato

and many others I'm sure

Caravan - Winter Wine > Nine Feet Underground
Camel - Nimrodel > Lady Fantasy
Renaissance (Live at Carnegie Hall) - Mother Russia better than the two epics (which are great epics)
ELP - Are You Ready Eddy > ... no, I'm joking.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

First one I thought of for some reason.

I can't think of any other album I feel strongly about, so I must really love epics.

But I could say that Fogwalking is my favorite song of Peter Hammill's - A Black Box, but I love the epic Flight as well. Also Jack The Ripper is my favorite on Universe Zero's Hérésie and not La Faulx (which is still great)

On Relayer, my favorite track is To Be Over. Gates of Delirium is a fantastic epic, but it's not on the same level as Close to the Edge or even The Revealing Science of God IMO. Plus, I think To Be Over is really overlooked.

Agree 100%...

It showcased how well Howe and Moraz blended together and contained (what I think) are the best Yes harmonies up to that time until Trevor Rabin came along…

I love me some epics, but often have trouble with them as a cohesive entity or suite, and love a well constructed and compact "shorter" track, so my favorites from albums are often not the epic(s), though sometimes I love the epic too.  So many examples but among them

Renaissance-Scheherazade:  A Trip to the Fair (which is still an epic)
Renaissance-Novella: Midas Man
Renaissance-Ashes are Burning: Can you Understand, On the Frontier
Eloy-Inside:  title track
Mike Oldfield-Crises:  Moonlight Shadow, In High Places
Eris Pluvia-Rings of Earthly Light:  The Way Home
Asturias-Brilliant Streams:  Rogus
Babe Ruth - Amar Caballero:  Broken Cloud
Genesis-Foxtrot: Watcher of the Skies
Believe-Hope to see another day: Pain
Believe-The Warmest Sun in Winter:  Please Go Home
Albion-The Indefinite State of Matter: Airborn
Camel-Moonmadness: Airborn (!), Spirit of the Water
Mr Toad - Trench Art:  Bach's Cat
as long as the title track)
Moving Hearts - The Storm:  Titanic
Mostly Autumn - The Last Bright Light: The Dark Before the Dawn, Hollow
Moongarden - Moonsadness: Seagulls
Minotaurus- Fly Away: Your Dream
David Minasian - Random Acts of Beauty: Blue Rain
Loreena McKennitt - The Visit:  The Old Ways (not on PA but of interest to lots of prog fans)
Steve Hackett - Spectral Mornings: Every Day
Magna Carta-Seasons:  Ring of Stones
KIng Crimson-LIzard: Cirkus
Yes-Close to the Edge: And You and I
Gracious!-GRacious!:  Heaven
Gracious!-This is Gracious:  Blue Skies and Alibis
Procol Harum-Shine on Brightly:  Quite Rightly So
Tangerine Dream-Force Majeure:  Cloudburst Flight
Tangerine Dream-Cyclone: Riding Runner Missed by Endless Sender
Forever Twelve-Remembrance Branch: Burning Ink
Faveravola-La Contea...: almost anything besides the longest track
Dice-Silvermoon: Another Day
Sagrado Coracao da Terra-Farol de Liberdade:  Pantanal
Collage-Over and Out:  What about the Pain
Clepsydra-Fears:  The Cloister
Carol of Harvest-.s/t:  Try a Little Bit
Alan Stivell-Renaissance de la Harpe Celtique: Ys, Eliz Iza
Seven Reizh-Samsara: Sonj
Silver Lining-The Inner Dragon:Lovestalgia
Jean Luc Ponty-Imaginary Voyage: New Country
Promethean-Gazing the Invisible: Invisible, Don't Mind the Dancer
