Hi,
Kinda sad to see things like this in the press and I wish/hope that PA folks can do something about it ... we need to put these jerks down writing this kind of crap. https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/news/four-overplayed-bands-from-the-1970s-that-did-not-deserve-the-love/ar-AA1orVvh?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=2324f97dc7a24e359bf10291faed2017&ei=37 Rush/Ramones/Jethro Tull and John Denver .... were/are all very talented musicians that deserved the attention they got, and their material sold well ... my thoughts are that the person who is writing this stupid article is a record company stooge that is upset that he has not been able to make any more money off any music, and thinks that these older talents are stealing the spotlight. I don't agree ... and you can see the results with many concerts, recently, getting dumped left and right, and they are not exactly nobodies, usually older folks that really think they are "better" than all the stuff out there, and in essence, I'm not sure that is true at all. I'm not sure that just promoting "progressive" is the right thing to do, since so much of the new music out there is "not" progressive, and also deserves a mention ... but, possibly, PA is limiting its input and perhaps it is time to suggest a possible upgrade so merde like what was posted gets dumped? It's down right mean, and sick to see stuff like that ... even folks on PA ... but this is sad, and I hope that we can improve that all around ... but I'm not sure that my suggestions will get the read/listen, because the explanations would take more than one sentence and ...

Not sure what the point of that MSN article is...but I like Rush and Tull and believe they deserved the love they received, ....never cared much for Denver or the Ramones but as pointed out they also did well. So exactly what is that person (Lee Vowell) moaning about? |

LMAO Anyway, I'm about 99% sure this whole article is just deliberately stirring up outrage in order to generate a lot of ad revenue with the least amount of effort.

MSN is an aggregate news feed. The article comes from Fansided's music site AudioPhix. Fansided's main focus has been sports.
Looking through his articles might give a better impression of his interests. I find it strange how some get so outraged by some stranger on the internet writing an article that they don't like. It's the wild west of the internet folks where everyone not only has an a****le but can act like one.
What would you suggest that PA folks do about it? You can try to contact Fansided to complain, post a twitter message, try to contact the writer. Being succinct can help. If your suggestions are clearly written, well thought-out and composed, then I expect they will be read. Instead of improving it all around, maybe start trying to have conversations and share your views with individuals. This might cause something of a butterfly effect. |

Hi, Honestly? I'm afraid that anything I write to that effect will be ignored. I may be opinionated but I am Ok with reading what people write and try to figure it out, and many times I felt that the ensuing comments were taken off one paragraph and not the whole thing ... that paragraph was just a part of something else. I came from a literary (and famous) family ... I have seen and met a lot of folks in that area, and there is a lot that they did that helped ... the only concern I have, these days, is that the Internet is a place where "interest" becomes something else really quick, and it hurts the ideas and concepts of the whole thing. I'm not sure that anything I suggest is going to go very far ... you folks don't have enough Admins and Help to be able to take things a few steps further ... like one example ... a SEPARATE area for new bands ... instead of it being mired and lost in the middle of everything else. And that area needs to be "major" as in clear and labelled as such .... for example. One of my problems ... I always have ideas ... and it showed when I was directing on stage ... never an issue that a different step could not fix! The question is always ... do we have the interest for doing something else, other than just discuss the romantic era of music from the 1800's in Europe! That scene died after 50 years (more or less) so "progressive" is getting there ... and are we going to die and fall over like the dinosaurs?

I'm an ideas oriented person, but, as my wife would point out (she's an engineer), that's well and good, but practical ideas that you can pragmatically put in place are better than just ideas. There's lot that I would have liked to see changed at this site (and some of my ideas were implemented), but I recognise that this is NOT my site, Maxime is not easy to contact, and many big changes would be his ultimate call. If you have ideas, and think it should be fairly easy to implement, then is you are able to contact him it might help. I like the idea of a section for new bands, both in the main site and at the forum. If it's just the forum, well, I might be able to add that myself. I would suggest that it then be for any style or approach to music. If it's for the database, bands should still be added to the normal categories. That said, I was thinking specifically of what to do to help change the internet culture that leads to articles like the one you wrote. I don;t know what you would want PA folk to do about it other than what you can do yourself. I think you can respond to such things with your concerns, but neither you nor I can stop it any more than we can bring world peace. You and I and every other PA forum member has some influence with people here at least. With proposals, definitely having specific recommendations for implementation are useful and it helps to keep it on point. The more thought-out, thought-through and coherently and succinctly while sufficently expressed the better.

The bit about Rush is weirdly innacurate. Did someone even bother to proof read it? It's quite a feat to write something this short that is so wrong. Just read the bit about the long songs. He seems to believe that their songs got longer when they starting using synths. This is a classic case of just ignoring the facts in case they get in the way of a 'good' argument. It's nonsense of course. I have to say that I have noticed a slight backlash against Rush in recent years on here and on a few y/t channels (well Andy Edwards mainly). I get the feeling that there are those that think they were overrated and that comes from the rock fraternity as well as the prog community. Perhaps he's trying to ride that vibe?!
I've always felt Tull were a bit overrated but that's just a personal view that carries no weight. I love Aqualung to death but can barely be that bothered to listen to most of their other stuff. They did seem a bit like a puffed up folk rock band at times. However he doesn't have any argument against them other than the terrible crime that they used flute. Well they managed to sell 40 million plus albums somehow so they were doing something right I guess. The Ramones were just a terrible band.IMO John Denver - no one cares enough I suspect to even get angry about this.
RushThere is no dispute that Rush had talent. Perhaps the best rhythm section ever was Neil Peart's drum and Geddy Lee's bass. This isn't an argument that Rush were simply bad because they weren't. What happened, though, was that the band got far too much attention for being viewed as some kind of mythological group. You either bought into the themes and concept or you were viewed as maybe not smart enough to do so. One of the issues was that all the talent the band had began to lead them into musical directions that they couldn't quite harness. Once the band came to use more synths, they lost the uniqueness that they had as a three-piece guitar drum bass. Plus, the songs became overly long and self-important. We get it. Space people and odd mystic images. Fine, but give us some rock as well. Instead, they became a louder version of Jethro Tull. |
