I don't know if this counts as Tech Talk, but I'm looking to see what Plugins bands have used in their recordings, to the best of your knowledge, preferably by song (album) and artist (band). I would also welcome your guesses on the plugins that have defined the overall sound of progressive music through the years. I also know that the use of plugins and sound-manipulating softwares is preferential and experimental, but it'll be good to know what others use to achieve their unique sound.

Yes it does.

There are sooo many it's hard to ascertain who uses what. Every studio probably has a 5h!t load to choose from. Plugins can be anything from Compressor/Limiters or EQ or even Reverb. And again, the market place has tons to choose from. Pick up a copy or Modern Recording magazine sometime and just look at all the ads.

Are you interested in any particular plugin?
Thank you for supporting independently produced music

But there are, also, certain sounds that define a band, or instrumentalist, maybe its better to give examples from songs and analyze the sound produced in that particular piece of music. This topic could also serve as a place for users to share their favorite plugins and what they do. I'm actually just getting into recording and am highly concerned with the sound design and overall sound characteristics of my music that is why i wanted to broaden my knowledge on the plugins and what fits were with real life examples that i can listen to.

Thanks for your reply

I’d look into AUDEZE REVEAL plugins. I’ve heard mixed reviews on them, but they seem quite specialized to mimic some notable mixing studios. They are expensive but worth a look.

For me, these are some of my favorites:

synthesizers:
Virtual String Machine (from GForce)
M-Tron Pro (from GForce)
Podolski (from u-he)
VK-1 Viking (from Blamsoft)
Xpand!2 (from Air Music Technology)
Surge XT (open source)

drums:
EZdrummer (from Toontrack) - have multiple kits + sound expansions

bass:
Ample Bass J (from Ample Sound)
Taurus (from Antti of Smart Electronix) - like virtual Moog Taurus bass pedals

guitar:
Ample Guitar TC (from Ample Sound)
Ample Guitar M II Lite (from Ample Sound)

reverb/echo:
Valhalla Supermassive

plus some of the sound production bits and pieces already built into the Reaper DAW.

Another one I have, but haven't messed around with is the Ivor microtonal synth. I understand Surge XT is supposed to have a microtonal component too, but I haven't explored this synth that deeply yet.

Don't forget the Hammond B-3X by IK Multimedia. It is by far the best plugin emulation of the Hammond organ out there, blowing all other software and hardware clonewheels out of the water IMHO.

I myself like the Arturia collection, it seems to have everything. I have a song in which I'm using Farfisa and Prophet 5, I use both of them from Arturia works quite well. I should say that I don't know much about synths as I'm not a keyboard player per se. But about guitars I use Amplitube and it's newest feature tonex, works like a charm. I also have a bunch of cersions of Neural Dsp. I guess I'm wondering aside from amps and simulated instruments, what more I can use, I know there's tape hiss, saturation and all that stuff, i want to get to know them better. I'm also an idiot when it comes to EQ

Does anyone here have a favorite choir vst, plugin that they could recommend? I mean like something with possibilities for adjustments that would blow my mind. Or do you think it's better to use a synth to simulate that sound? If so, which synth or keyboard does that kind of stuff?

Thank you
