Nothing dismal about Dead Can Dance's The Serpent's Egg. And I really like Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden, Cardiacs' A Little Man and a House, and I like Faust's The Last LP.

My friends used to call me a pessimist, but I realise that I can seem very optimistic in these parts by comparison.    I do prefer to focus on what I appreciate more than what I don't commonly.

Maybe I came across as too contrary. I wouldn't say dismal, but the list isn't very good for my tastes either. There are a number of albums I love, and he ones I like best are in the top 50 (not sure I like any after that). I could make a really sweet for my taste list from the year of 25 or so. Various of those top 50 would be included, and various of mine would not be in PA or be considered Prog (like Siouxsie and The Banshees Peepshow, Cocteau Twins' Blue Bell Knoll…. I'd be lying if I said that 1988 is one of the strongest years in my collection.
You mentioned Japanese albums and one of my favourites from the 80s is Japanese and from the 1988 year, Symphonic Suite AKIRA, {edit forgot to specify by whom} by Geinoh Yamashirogumi.

Any year can be great if you look hard enough and any list of favourites can be great if you have diverse enough tastes. Of course.

^ To be honest, I'd like these Top 100 lists a lot more if they didn't include nearly as much Avant Prog and Death Metal. Just the shock horror, bad taste band names alone are enough to put me off ever listening to them in full. For instance:- Autopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Obituary, Pestilence, Leprosy, Coroner and Deathrow, just to name a few. They sound like potential titles for the next Stephen King novel. Tongue

I very rarely come across any Japanese albums I dislike though, so I always look out for any albums by the trusty Japs appearing in the Top 100. Thumbs Up

I'm familar with a few of those. IQ's album is not actually that bad although Tull and Oldfield perhaps hit total low points in their career. Don't know the others. It's just interesting to me that you have some of the legends of prog falling down to the bottom rung of the ladder. 1989 however was a terrible year for music across the board not just prog. The 80's in itself was a damaging decade introducing the idea of 'cool' over actual musicians and the pursuit of artistic endeavour in music. The system was broken.

^ That's the first album I've ever heard by Mike Keneally, but I'm sure it won't be the last. His quirky tunes remind me a lot of Frank Zappa, which may go some way towards explaining the lowly 2-star rating. Or maybe not. Tongue
