 Topic: ELO’s "El Dorado": I’m Liking It

I recently purchased the Electric Light Orchestra's "El Dorado" CD and feel compelled to communicate to others that it is a very wonderful experience. It only takes a few listens and then it gets under your skin and you find yourself obsessing over it.
It's a concept LP, but I haven't fully interpreted it. It seems to be about this young guy who has a vision of an ideal woman, goes in search of her in the city, and winds up falling in with a prostitute.
Any others have thoughts/opinions on this lp?

I don't know what "El Dorado" is about, but you should definately check out "On the Third Day" as well, if you already haven't.

The only ELO I've heard is the pop ELO but I've also hard opinions that El Dorado is their only progressive album.

Not in my opinion though... ELO was never progressive...
El Dorado is a good album.. but just like other ELO albums... it's still popish.

no way on that, all of them up through A New World Record are either prog or borderline prog. My two favs are On the Third Day, and ELO2 (though the vocals are ROUGH on ELO2). Picked up early on here, that ELO gets no respect here, considering some of the groups that are listed under prog archive. I find that curious.

From what I can hear from El Dorado, it is definitely beyond pop. It is very reminiscent of mid & late-Beatles Lennon, esp. "I am the Walrus" and "Across the Universe." Lynne seems to have been very influenced by these Lennon stylings.
I'm not sure how to classify it, it's very eclectic, almost psychedelic, in a melodramatic sense.
It also reminds me of mid-Seventies Rundgren as well.

good call, Lynne was HEAVILY influenced by Lennon as a matter of fact.
