After a long decade off stage, TMV are back on tour and have played their first of two NY shows last night. Now, I know a lot of folks didn't care for their Dirty Projectors in the Caribbean style new LP, but their setlist is focused on their first three records and was performed admirably. Kicking off with the haunting "Vicarious Atonement", the show heated up fast as they tore through "Roulette Dares" and "Eriataka". The beautiful and groovy new "Graveyard Love" was hardly a roadblock to their energy as the band practically swam in the likes of "L'Via L'Viaquez" and "Cygnus....", each song in the set performed in full and all their glory. Omar, Marcel, and Cedric played as if the past ten years never happened, and the returning Eva Gardner on bass, and the new drummer Linda-Philomène Tsoungui and keyboardist Leo Genovese all fit right in. Their almost two hour set concluded where The Mars Volta began with rousing versions of "Son et lumiere" and "Inertiac ESP", and the band tossed their picks and drumsticks into the crowd as they took their bows.
Last note goes to the wonderful opener Teri Gender Bender and her band, performing a set made up entirely of new material. The longtime Rodriguez-Lopez collaborator was an amazing and at times possessed singer, backed by excellent musicians playing an eclectic mix of instrumentals that in their own way matched TMV's balance of power and tranquility.
