A great playlist of discoveries for all of us to discover indeed, and another superhard poll.
Out of competition, because I know these tracks already: North Sea Radio Orchestra (I have nominated this album as a contender for best album of the decade) and The Comet is Coming.

9 Paper Dolls: This is super beautiful if slightly too familiar for a Sufjan Stevens fan.
8 Le Grad Sbam: This probably takes more time, it's extremely creative and has some very attractive parts but these are sometimes frustratingly cut short, too many  "and now for something completely different" moments.
7 Spencer Cullum's Coin Collection: It starts to get very hard to not vote for some of these. I love these mixes where you think you have the musicians around you in your flat.
6 Kuunatic: When I heard this for the first time, I thought, no way I'm not voting for this... but this evening my mood is different, tough luck.
5 Jonathan Hulten: Another vote-worthy one that misses out due to my current mood that draws me away from all that fits all too well with some things I already know.
4 Gaupa: Great pick, any singer that comes close to Bjork must be great, the music reminds me of Chenille's Samen album with another powerful female singer, yeah, the hard rocking ladies. Tough luck that today all "it reminds me of..." candidates end outside the top 3.
3 Fausto: Today it's the surprise factor that is winning, I'd never have thought that the emotional and melodramatic beginning can lead up to this kind of hypnotic chorus. Wow!
2 Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band: Ok, admittedly there are elements here that remind me of (...), too, but overall this is such a glorious positive melodic but still inventive track.
1 Vanishing Twin:  *The* discovery of this collection of discoveries! They know what it takes to win me over.

Just cast my votes and read the preceding two posts. I too had taken The Comet Is Coming and North Sea Radio Orchestra out of competition.

Definitely a strong playlist. I went through once in the order of the poll and then a few times on shuffle.

In the end, I settled on a top two.

1. Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band.
2. Bonny Light Horseman

Then it became a fierce battle among Vanishing Twin, Gaupa, and Jonathan Hultén. Suiting my mood at this time, my third vote went to...

3. Jonathan Hultén.

The other two receive honorable mentions with Bijelo Dugme, Spencer Cullum, and Battlestations.

1. Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - A Wizard of the World
A really enjoyable and multifaceted track so many twists and turns - added to favorites

2. Vanishing Twin - Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life - such a tricky number song since you have to enjoy many minutes before the song comes in but that was all part of it

3. Roberto Vecchioni - "Vorrei" - It may be more conventional but it really still has that extra special composition, musicianship, and passion. 

And I'd like to count your hair

And at the end

And confuse them and start over

I will add some more comments later but for now this is where my votes will go to:

North Sea Radio Orchestra-GBR: A cross-disciplinary chamber orchestra performing their own compositions, beautifully combining contemporary classical music styles with folk and rock. This is unique and I want to listen to more of their music. Am I the only one who was not aware of this fantastic music ensemble?

Le Grand Sbam-FRA: In German we would call this a “Gesamtkunstwerk” (eng. synthesis of the arts?). Prog rock breaking new ground? A must see/hear for me, absolutely!

Fausto Bordalo Dias-POR: How is it possible that I haven’t heard of this outstanding Portuguese singer-songwriter before? Fausto started his musical career in the 1970s and grew up in Angola, back then still a Portuguese colony. I listened to a few of his other songs and was able to recognize his wide-ranging stylistic influences. Fausto is also a politically and socially committed artist which captured my interest even more, given the major political changes in Portugal in the 1970s.

Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band: I loved this vivid and colourful psychedelic rock tune. It was a strong contender for my podium. It is a pity that we have only three votes, given the vast musical diversity of this edition. The band is inspired by classic psych rock which in itself is very positive, but maybe a bit too much for my taste. Hopefully they will continue to develop their sound into something wholly new, without losing their psychedelic roots.

Roberto Vecchioni: I really appreciate this Italian singer-songwriter and especially his poetic and often nostalgic lyrics. Normally, it doesn’t matter to me whether I know an artist or not, but he was in direct competition with Portugal’s Fausto whom I had not known before.

As for my own choice, well I didn’t expect that in a rock music forum many people would be familiar with this jazzy track. You guys proved me wrong, and I am glad about that in some ways. Next time I will try to surprise you, maybe with an artist/band from outside the English-speaking area. Wink

Thought I'd remembered this name from a post of yours, Mike.  Last night I was in a chat room of a progressive show and one of the people in the band was there.  The song, "Life, Death and Cheers," on this release was playing, he said that he wrote the tune about his father, who'd died on his (his father's) birthday, which was also New Year's Day.  It explains the juxtaposition of sounds in the piece.
