Heavy metal musicians, under their hard shell, are hopeless romantics who often excel at composing sentimental melodies!

I voted thus as such: #1. Erik Truffaz - Trippin’ The Lovelight Fantastic I'm into this vibe right now so digged the track a lot/ It was subtle, easy goin' - just what i like on a hot summers night. #2. Soul Coughing - Screenwriter's Blues Again, cant get away from this feeling of nostalgia and hazy LA - besides i liked a few of these guys live recordings / seems to evoke a real 90s beatnik kind of mixed with latent 60s but could still be relevant to present . I like the grungy, dirty, smelly, sweatyness of it all. #3. Masters of Reality - T.U.S. A. Now that was the best track I heard since Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast - no seriously, at least its about tea and of course, no yanks can make a good brew, sorry, classic - love it LOL Shout-outs to..... Matthew Trapnell - Ella's Uncle Nice samples and vibe again, was close to making my top 3 Robin Williamson - Five Denials On Merlin's Grave I got into this about the 3rd time i came across it and actually had patience to listen to it and it was really quite fun and gentle. I'm sorry, if you were right, I'd agree with you. Robin Williams.

Glad to have made discover Paddy McAloon's I Trawl the Megahertz to you, and some even voted for it (thanks!). It is true that there is not much development in the music (as this came up in some of the remarks): it is trawling the sea of music, picking up a melody here, an instrument there, a sound... and making it recurring elements. Someone could be easily distracted by something else if one is not listening to the text - and I think that upon a first listen it is difficult to grasp the coherence of it. Here too, he has been trawling snippets of life accounts, but for me, the development is in this text: it has a wonderful crescendo by accumulation and a very poignant final. But... it is long... Thanks to those who listened to it in its entirety. Exceptionally I thought I allow myself to put you up with a long track for this one, because I think it is at least worth discovering. The next one will be shorter... (I think...) Edited by suitkees - August 28 2021 at 13:01 |

So here are my votes: 1: Arnold Schönberg - Pierrot Lunaire, Serenade Yeah, I did know the piece, but I just can't resist Schönberg and sprechgesang. Fascinating and poetic it is. 2: Masters of Reality - T.U.S. A. Excellent drumming which basically carries the whole thing. I've always loved drumming. 3: Gilad Atzmon - Joven, Hermosa y Triste Hard not to resist tango.... HONORABLE MENTIONS: 2: I hereby declare that I'm a jerk. For its subtle and elaborate use of the Neapolitan 6th chord and the washboard. Edited by The Anders - August 28 2021 at 16:00 |

My votes go to:
Dan Turell & Halfdan This man has it all for me, poetic prose about everyday life of a taxi driver, recited in a laidback manner. A humorous yet thoughtful description of a microcosmos accompanied by a jazzy rock tune with fantastic bass. Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble I attended their concert back in 2004 on their promotion tour of ‘Exile’. An outstanding album and a memorable concert. I believe that this recording with Robert Wyatt was released around the same period. This jazz/ tango fusion comes as a surprise and it shows the versatility of this musician. Very nice, indeed! Robin Williamson I first thought that this was a Shakespeare recital or similar, esp. due to the historic topic of the text. But then I took a closer look at Williamson’s short biography and realized that in fact this epic piece of art was his own work. Therefore, I decided to read the entire text more carefully and was blown away. Additionally the effect was enhanced by the musical accompaniment, a Scottish/Irish traditional tune. Overall, this was a very interesting edition and I wish I had more
votes. In any event I would like to thank you all for your great contributions! And last but not least a big thank you goes out to Christian for organising this poll! Edited by Mila-13 - August 29 2021 at 07:06 |

Don't worry about the votes, you bring good material, this was a very difficult round. For a seemingly simple topic, there was a vast array of types of spoken word, very hard to pin down and thin out for voting. The votes are sort of extraneous to what I love about these polls, which is the conversation around the pieces presented (when people have time to do so). Here, you will get a special mention in that, I was smitten by the non-verbal one you posted for a discussion of going one step farther than spoken word, into no verbiage at all. Although not spoken, nor musical, it was assuredly very moving art.

^ You see, when you don't have a more sophisticate musical education you pass by those kind of things. If I had known, my appreciation of this option might have been different...

My #1 vote goes to Soul Coughing's "Screenwriter Blues" which is a captivating mix of weird, freaky vocal and melodic elements backed up by a groovy 90s jam; I'll definitely be checking out more from this band eventually. Runner-up is Prefab Sprout's "I Trawl The Megahertz" which certainly has a mesmerizing beauty to it but went on for perhaps a bit too long without much musical development.

Hey Nickie, yes this poll was a challenge in many ways! On one hand you had the lyrics and on the other the music. The length of a text does affect the music to some extent which can be just an accompaniment or an a bit more elaborate composition. To look at a piece in its entirety was not easy at all. Moreover for me as a non-native English speaker it was even harder. I'm glad that you understood my way of thinking regarding the interpretation of the poll topic. Not everybody has an affinity for that. - Thank you for joining the new poll! Let's see how it goes, it's the first interactive poll that I'm organising. Edited by Mila-13 - August 31 2021 at 10:40 |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Phew, I'm goddamn late!
Here's my podium: 1-) Erik Truffaz - Trippin’ The Lovelight Fantastic: Really a beautiful audial trip. It would be better as a full instrumental song, but the "talks" don't spoil the music anyway. 2-) Robin Williamson - Five Denials On Merlin's Grave: Well... Fantasy! Really interesting stuff. Mind you, I don't take all or most of the fantasy stuff outright as interesting, for granted. 3-) Matthew Trapnell - Ella's Uncle: Hmm... Love it. I especially like such stuff as "background music" while chatting at a bar. Sorta reflects the metropolitan vibes in a enthralling way. Whilst, for this particular song, the percussions might make it difficult to "talk" in the bar. Edited by Shadowyzard - September 14 2021 at 09:28 |
