I've enjoyed seeing Rush and Yes induction clips of the
Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame. So, the past week I've been checking out
clips of other Prog Bands' induction moments at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Ceremonies. Below is
my resulting "Top 10" list: 10. Ann Wilson's (of Heart) induction speech for the Moody Blues in 2018.
So it starts maybe a bit slow, and has received some criticism, but I
thought it captured who the Moody Blues are quite well (funny, though,
how Hayward looks a little bored). 9. Trey Anastio's (Phish) induction speech for Genesis in 2010. Also
quite a good speech, in which he expresses appreciation for a lot of
Genesis's earlier career (most of which the crowd probably hasn't
heard). 8. Frank Zappa's Induction Clip in 1995.
Of course, he had already passed away in 1993 (Daughter Moon accepted
his award), so the clip was important for the ceremony--the best one I
saw of all of them as it really captures the essence of his
career/personality. 7. Jeff Beck says "...F%#* Them" (to the Yardbirds) in his induction speech in 1992 ...for kicking him out (?) in 1965. So
the Yardbirds aren't exactly Prog (maybe proto?) but JB certainly was.
It was kind of a joke, but seems he had a serious undertone. In any
case, its amusing to watch. 6. Chris Martin (of Coldplay) reads "The Bible" during his induction speech for Peter Gabriel in 2014. Also a great humorous moment, and seemed to be appreciated by Gabriel. 5. Rick Wakeman's acceptance speech has the crowd in stitches in 2017. Probably the best stand-up comedy ever done at a HOF ceremony! Didn't focus much on the band, but still, funny as hell. 4. Alex Lifeson's "Blah Blah" acceptance speech in 2013. Everyone
was pretty much expecting him to go back to some actual words, but did
the whole thing as "Blah Blah". Goes down in history as, perhaps, the
most interesting acceptance speech in HOF history! 3. Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins (of the Foo Fighters) induction speech for Rush in 2013. Definitely the best induction speech of all; funny, spirited, and spot-on! 2. Geddy Lee fills in on Bass with Yes for a performance of Roundabout in 2017. So never mind that John Anderson seemed to dis him a bit, this is still awesome, and a prog-fan's wet dream come true! 1. Rush gets a standing ovation at the 2013 Hall of Fame cermony before their name is even mentioned! ...causing Jann Wenner to jump in surprise. Of course it was an ultimate expression of their "overdue-ness". Not entirely sure, but I'm guessing this had never happened before, and maybe not since, but it goes down, in my book, as the greatest moment in Rock and Roll HOF history. And here are some honorable mentions: Billy Corgan's good Pink Floyd induction speech for Pink Floyd in 1996. Rush members jam with Public Enemy at the concluding medley in 2013. Lee and Lifeson's speech for Yes in 2017 (they could have done better). Peter Gabriel's performances at his induction. Please post any of your favorites I may have missed, or express like/dislike for the ones here. Edited by zwordser - February 17 2021 at 14:44 |

Ian Anderson, Carl Palmer and Robert Fripp's induction speeches....
....oh, wait.

Cool. I didn't look at Steely Dan before, but that's a good clip.
