Patience Season 1 6 episodes
Another crime drama but this one centering on the problem solving skills of autistic police archivist Patience Evans. She helps detective Bea Metcalf not only to solve cases but provides insights into her own challenges with her special needs son. Incredibly well acted by Ella Maisy Purvis (herself autistic) as Patience and Laura Fraser as Bea, this is a great buddy cop series with a twist. 9/10 Edited by richardh - March 13 2025 at 22:11 |

Severance
Orwellian future-shock about a corporation that requires employees to split their conscious memories between their work-life and their personal life. An ex-employee who has overridden his bifurcation implant begins to approach department head Mark (Adam Scott) in his outside life, causing a schism in Mark that grows more prevalent. When a defiant employee (Britt Lower) decides she doesn't like the arrangement and Mark starts to question the life they've chosen, things go badly. Beautifully produced, tense, disturbing, Severance is a sophisticated drama with plenty of Phillip K. Dick on hand. |

I've just watched the first 2 episodes of Adolescence. It's impressive that each episode is shot in one take. But even more impressive when I read this:
So how did they film in one take? Well Netflix has just shared a bunch of details. Posting on X (formerly known as Twitter) on 15 March, the streamer revealed they planned to film each episode at least 10 times, with one take being shot in the morning and the next in the afternoon. This process was to happen over five days, but inevitably not everything always goes to plan and there were some episodes where they ended up abandoning takes and doing more than the planned 10. They then shared which take ended up as the final episode we saw on Netflix: Episode 1 - Take 2 - was shot on shoot day 1 of 5 Episode 2 - Take 13 - was shot on shoot day 5 of 5 Episode 3 - Take 11 - was shot on shoot day 5 of 5 Episode 4 - Take 16 - was shot on shoot day 5 of 5 Netflix then went onto reveal how the cast prepared for each episode, explaining: "In preparation for the shoot, segments of the script were rehearsed and a little bit more added each day – starting with five minutes on the first day and then adding further material as they went through, so by the end of the week they would be doing full run-throughs." If the cast forgot or messed up a line they would either carry on with the mistake or if it was too big to ignore they would then reset and abandon the take. During their rehearsals the cast and crew would work out how to move around each other, with Netflix adding: "Sometimes it was necessary for some of the crew to remain in shot, in these instances they were dressed in costume so that they could blend into the show to serve as extras in the shot." As for that drone shot at the end of episode two? Well turns out they attached the camera to a drone as they were following Jade (Fatima Bojang) out of the school and the camera flew 0.3 miles to where Eddie (Stephen Graham) was placing the flowers and caught by a separate camera crew who "smoothly catch the camera and transition into a close shot of Stephen Graham." I did see some the filming shots on the One Show and the camera guys were amazing the way they moved the equipment around, passing cameras onto jigs and to other cameramen, even drones. A very good TV drama too.

^ I'm aware of the series although I don't have Netflix anymore, getting some buzz in the media so to speak. Stephen Graham is one of the best British actors around.
Just finished Apple TV's Prime Target. Not sure how much I enjoyed it and largely it was an unconvincing drama about weird mathematical equations, cyber security and the usual ridiculous computer hackery that only exists in TV and film land. Not enough tension but good location filming in the UK and The Middle East made it at least partly enjoyable plus an appearance from legendary actor Steven Rea helped it along. Overall 7/10 for those with far too much time on their hands (me apparently!) Also just watched the first 2 episodes of Dope Thief (the first one directed by Ridley Scott). This is totally addictive from the off and features Brazilian actor Wagner Moura in perhaps his first decent role since playing Pablo Escobar in the hit Netflix drama Narcos.

Severance Season 2
Ends with a great feature length episode. Sagged a tiny bit in the middle but mostly A+ (overall 9/10). Season 3 is also now offically green lit to go into production.

Beacon 23 Season 2
I managed to drag myself through this in the end with the hope it would improve (It didn't). Problem is the story lines (or lack of them) and that old chestnut ''The Alien Artifact'' which was done way better in The Expanse. Also a real head scratcher, why was young Astor speaking in an American accent but grown up Astor (played by Leana Heady) with a strong Yorkshire dialect and no trace of an American accent?! 5/10

^ Yes, season 2 of Beacon 23 was a real chore - a shame really as the first season showed promise.
I'm 4 episodes into season 2 of the brilliant Severance (I'll always wait for a show to be fully released before starting). I absolutely love shows like this - weird, mysterious and gripping. The acting is sublime, notably John Torturro. Just superb TV.

Just read that Adolescence is the first streaming only show to top the weekly ratings chart in the UK since they started counting these things back in 2021. That's impressive given that we have one of the most popular TV shows The Apprentice on at the moment and it also beat Death In Paradise which has also got good recently with the introduction of actor Don Gillet into the main role.
Just watched a 3 episode thing on Amazon called Fear that stars Martin Compston from Line Of Duty. It's very interesting stuff and asks the question ''How far should you go to protect your family?''. This is normally the thing of Jason Statham movies but here it's given a more thoughtful treatment. Also features support from the great actor James Cosmo but just be aware it's filmed in Glasgow so you'll need the subtitles on

I finished Fargo season five, an anthology series with each season telling a different story, with Juno Temple, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joe "Steve the Hair Harrington" Keery and Dave Foley of Kids in the Hall. I have Crave in Canada and quite recently that streaming service got the rights to Fargo. I had already watched and loved the first three seasons, with the first season remaining my favourite (still have the fourth to see completely) and very much enjoyed this. I did npot find it as powerful as, say, the first, partially because I might feel I know better a little better what kind of things to expect, but also because it did not have the same level of spiralling inevitably to something bad happening. Fargo has always involved making some bad and/or questionable decisions, but this one demonstrates that ultimately the choice is up to you and you can change your path, your destiny.
It's more empowering in that way. A big focus of the season is domestic abuse and trying to make a new life. I really enjoyed it, as someone who was into Kids in the Hall when it came out (and watched some of the revival series), it was a pleasure to see Dave Foley and Jon Hamm's nipple rings not as much. I read an "audience" review of it at rotten tomatoes that I hated which said "Stick to the first 3 seasons. Don't even attempt to watch 4." I commonly like it when people considerately express their thoughts, but I also commonly dislike it when they tell me how to think and/or what to do. I'm glad I did not follow that reviewer's directive and made my own choices. |

It did feel to me that Season 4 stepped out of what was so good about Fargo although there is no reason to not watch it. Season 5 was a return to form with Jon Hamm playing the sort of arrogant 'Trump like' character that is very hissable for sure

Death in Paradise Season 14 (!)
The exclamation mark just for how many seasons there have been already. I enjoyed the dynamic of this season with the excellent actor Don Gilet adding some much needed grit to the frothy end of week 'switch off brain' entertainment. 8/10

Wolf Hall season 2 tonight on PBS with Mark Rylance & Damian Lewis. Last week's debut was as good as always, looking forward to this season.
