Hey there. I recently put out an EP for the first time and I was hoping for some feedback. As far as production goes, I'm very new and that shows in the music. But aside from that, I think the music itself is good and I'm hoping some people might agree!

You're new and it shows in the production, mix, and particularly the performance: tempo (your ability to keep steady time), intonation (how tuned your instruments are), and dynamics (the relation between instruments or players).   But not the music.   The comps are pretty decent for a newb, pretty progressive for an amateur.

Oh and find a drummer.  Please find a drummer.

It's all stuff I have to work on, for sure. I don't wanna call the EP rushed because I did work on it for a while, but I was eager to put something out and that certainly had an effect on the final product. Plus I don't own a bass

As for drums, yeah they're not strong. Most of the drums present are presets because I didn't want to try to write them through the program myself yet, though I'd say the parts that were written (the beginning of Voyage, small part of Memories, and all of Take Aim Where She Falls) sounded better for the music. It's something I'm going to try to practise a lot more before I actually release anything concrete again

Just out of curiosity, what do you think I could do in terms of production? I'm very new to mixing and mastering my own stuff so I don't really know what everything does.

As well, is there anything about the EP that you liked?

I liked your sense of composition, the mix of heavy guitar with jazzier passages, and charming naivete of it.

As far as mixing, it is something that takes many hours of listening, study of well-mixed albums (Zeppelin II for instance, Joshua Tree, or the Holy Grail of production: Peter Gabriel's So), and knowing what you want in a recording.   Ideally each instrument should be mixed equally but not always.   It's quite a difficult craft-- listen to, say, Floyd's The Delicate Sound of Thunder.   That's a good example of a great player (Gilmour) doing a poor mixing job.   Granted it was a live album and he'd just come off two grueling world tours so his ears were probably shot, but it sounds muddled, unbalanced, just not right as compared to The Song Remains the Same, Band of Gypsys, or even Frampton Comes Alive .

I'm not one of our more experienced members when it comes to music for sure, so for what it's worth:

Only listened to the first song so far. Of course it could be improved/ tweaked, but I think you are creative, have a good mind for structure, and do have the basics, so good job. I'm sure you'll get better and better. Instead of the drumming thing, which does detract, I might have experimented with percussion instruments such as maracas. Later on you might connect with more musicians, of course (help each other with your projects).

As for studying well-mixed albums, I think I'd turn to some in the post-rock/ math rock camp such as Mogwai, but that's just me. A number of people at this site have self-released music and done really well at it. Hopefully if you stick around the site you'll connect with them. Welcome to PA, by the way.

Thanks, man :) I'm glad I found a forum that actually kind of matches what I've written. I was wary about posting it on like sevenstring (despite the songs being played with a 7-string, it's not as evident as most of the music you'd hear from there), and metal forums since I wasn't if it truly constituted as metal, even though some parts are.

The drums are something I hope to get better with though. The only parts I wrote myself were 1:00 to 1:30 of Memories, and the entirety of Take Aim Where She Falls, and I think they fit the music better than the presets. It's just time consuming and I'm not a drummer (which is evident from the parts I've written, as they're not as full as they could be). I am hoping to add other sounds though, as you said, I just tried to keep this EP as simple for myself as I could, and I think it can only go up from here
