I'm not sure why - but i guess it's because his playing is so genuine. It doesn't come off like he's trying to sound intricate or unique. Though he certainly has both characteristics.
"Limelight" is still one of my favorite guitar solos. It has such an overwhelmingly elastic feeling to it. Really great sound.
I have a similar case to yours Richard. Out of all the progressive rock bands and whatnot that i've listened to, the guitarist that made me want to play guitar was Johnny Marr. The Smith have become one of my top 5 bands, but for some reason Marr's charming licks just wanted me to pick up a guitar to learn them.

You are neglecting his amazing period with "The Armoury Show" (1983 -1986)
One fantastic album "Waiting For The Floods" was released in 1985....John McGeogh's guitar is a standout on every track and especially on the title track.
Here is the album in it's entirety....take time to listen, and if you like it, order the CD and play it a thousand times like I have done over the past 30 years. It is still one of my all time favourite albums.

Have delved into a number of Robin Trower's more recent works, and even though he's slowed down a little, he's still inventive as heck, comes up with some beautiful tones, and remains a certifiable master of the Strat
