Topic: Making Polls in Non-Poll Forums Posted: March 17 2015 at 20:33 |
Probably an awfully obvious question, but I want to make a poll in the Proto-Prog/Prog Related forum and I can't, how do you make a poll in a forum other than Prog Polls and General Polls?

Polls in Proto Prog and Prog Related lounge are disabled to prevent a plethora of "Should they/Shouldn't they" polls. [clue: we don't want those kind of polls].
If you really must create a PP/PR Poll then as Rajinder says, create it in General Music Discussions. Once it is there it can be moved into the PP/PR forum by PMing an Admin and asking them very very nicely to move it for you. If you're very lucky they'll move it.

Or one can simply reply to any of the ten or twenty-thousand polls already in use that are most likely relevant to any poll question one considers creating.

Proto PROG? From what I seem to understand now, I think this meaning or classification is redundant. This is a none Latin or Greek word which confuses us even more so while not adding much to our understanding what it really means. Prog the only and best definition now and at the time

We've been through all this
This is a not redundant term, nor is it obsolete, but it is limited to a very narrow period of history Proto = Greek meaning "what came before" Prog = an abbreviated form of noun-phrase "Progressive Rock" Progressive = Latin meaning "advance". Rock = an abbreviated form of the noun-phrase "Rock and Roll" meaning (to dance to) music with a strong beat. Rock and Roll = a verbal phrase originally used as a euphemism for sexual intercourse.
"Proto Progressive Rock" literally means "What came before progressive Rock music"
and
"Progressive Rock" literally means "Rock music that advances"
However, once a phrase is used as the name of a thing it is called a "noun phrase" and now its meaning is either more than the literal meaning of the two words by themselves or something completely different.
For example "Avant Garde" literally means "Advanced Guard" ... the troops sent ahead of the main force to scout-out the land, yet we do not use the literal meaning when referring to avant garde art, avant garde music or Avant Garde Progressive Rock. That advance guard of troops were foot-soldiers, in Old French the word for foot soldier was 'paonier' (for Spanish speakers: "peon", for English speakers: "pawn", from the Latin "pedis") from where we get the word "Pioneer" so the phrase "avant garde" was used for pioneering art (and music)
So while "Proto Prog" literally means "what came before Prog" it obviously doesn't mean everything that came before Prog, it refers to music that specifically contributed to the development of Progressive Rock during the formative years of the 1960s - this is the period from (around) 1965 through to 1969. Because Progressive Rock is a merging of many different forms of music then the kind of music represented by Proto Prog will reflect those varied styles of music (Psychedelic Rock, Baroque Pop, Jazz-rock, Blues-rock, etc.). None of this was called Prog or Proto-Prog at the time because the genre of music that we call "Prog Rock" didn't exist until after 1969.
