We think he was about twelve.   He was the third cat I'd owned, a big grey & black striped tabby with a white chest and paws (I'm not much of a picture poster, sorry) and was the second cat in my life who had adopted me from our street.   He had developed an abdominal tumor very rapidly last month and we'd been nursing him with medication for several weeks.   Tonight he seemed to be feeling especially badly, shaky on his feet and unable to eat.   We knew it was probably time, and brought him in to a good local pet hospital who put him to sleep.   He died remarkably well, and had a wonderful, healthy and happy life.

My roommate and I will miss him in our lives terribly but are so grateful for the gift that he was.   Here's to all cats, alive and passed.

I'm so sorry David.  I know how hard that is and how devastating.  Cats are family, they are kids to those of who do not have children.  You become very attuned to them and develop your own language with them.  They are independent but eventually grace us with affection....they are complex creatures, more so than dogs I think. And they leave us too soon.

Beautifully said, Jim.   He was indeed a most affectionate, highly intelligent creature.   We just couldn't watch the poor guy suffer any longer.   He must've wondered what was happening to him.

Squeaky died this year and and was 19 years old.  She had a seizure on a Friday and another on a Monday when she finally passed.  I was glad we were there to comfort her.

Wow, nineteen, that's amazing.   I was also very glad to have seen Nabi through his ordeal, I would've felt terrible if I had not been around.

I didn't know that. I always thought it was the other way around.

This really sucks to hear (or read) this kind of news.

Cats are like babies: they are so innocent and they have little idea of what's going on in the world for them. Just about a month ago I saw a street cat freezing out there. My mother did not want to take any chances on taking care of it. (Of course, I'm still a momma's boy (and I'm 22) - my word isn't strong on a lot of things.) But you had the kindness (and I deeply respect that) and the means to take care of your little guy.

@Slartibartfast: I didn't know your girl passed on. I still remember that picture of her chilling out when you were not disturbing her with the noise you made there. Smile

I'm sorry for your loss David. My family is one where we have always considered oir pets family. I lost my first cat when I was around 10 and it was horrible. Then I lost my dog when I was around 17. Now I have two cats and they are part of my family, just as my sister's 2 cats or my mom's little dog.

Sorry to hear this, David.
I myself cried at the death of all the pets that I owned.
Cats are wonderful creatures, and I'm sure your cat was quite special too.

From one cat lover to another, I'm sorry for your loss. Once you feel ready, get yourself a kitten or perhaps even two to bring joy back in your life.

Funny, we just buried him today in the yard, not far from my last cat.

Thanks everyone for posting, means a lot.

Cheers, Teo, I know what an animal lover you are, as evidenced by the ragged sweet old pooch in your avy.

Aw sorry to hearCry I know I will be pretty upset when my cats go.
Not much else can be said that hasn't already, but pet owners know they really are part of the family. I always thought it funny until I had some, it's 100% true it turned out.

Least you enjoyed his time, and I'm sure vice versa

^ Thank you--  he was a gift, the twelve years we had was worth the month of heartbreak.
