Topic: Still Life Or Blackwater Park? Posted: October 29 2013 at 05:48 |
... and why? I just want to know because I don't really have time to listen to both. I've only ever heard part of Still Life which I didn't really like but I don't know if Blackwater Park is better for me (the heaviest album in my collection is Metropolis Pt. 2). If you can, please could you try to describe which bands you would probably listen to if you liked a certain album. Thanks!

I like Still Life better, but I also like the very early albums a lot, so maby that wont be any help for you.
I like any album from Opeth a lot more than Metropolis pt 2.

I voted Blackwater Park just for the slap bass part in the title track edit:

The music is amazing on both, but Still Life takes it because of its narrative. Who isn't a sucker for a Shakespearean concept Prog Death Metal album?

Still life is more melodic and consistent, which appeals far more to me since I'm not a huge fan of death metal. Blackwater Park has some fantastic riffs and melodies, but it often goes on for far too long without anything happening. I feel that both the title track and The Funeral Portrait are just Opeth by numbers, without having any actually good riffs or melodies, whereas every song on Still Life has great parts. For every great moment on Blackwater Park, I can think of two on Still Life.

They're both masterpieces, but Still Life still gets the edge by a wide margin. It's strong in every possible way, conceptually, musically, lyrically... I could go on and on.
However, I'm going to say the group's truly most accomplished album IMO is Ghost Reveries. Do not rule this critical achievement for music out, I'm basically begging you. It's a desert island album through and through.

Ghost of Perdition is probably my favorite Opeth tune.

I read a YouTube comment a while ago wondering if Rosemary was the My Arms Your Hearse widow. That would be quite the twist if it were true!

Blackwater Park, one of my top 5 albums. Stil Life's great but it's badly mixed, very hard to hear the bass.

Did you hear the remastered version? The improvement in sound quality is tremendous. It actually helped me enjoy the album a lot more.

^Definitely. I haven't heard the version before the remastering, but I can vouch for how balanced and complete the mix is after the apparent touch-ups. I also like the updated album cover much more too. One of my all time favorites, actually. It was the wallpaper on my phone for several months.

Is that the 5.1 remix that came out a few years ago? I haven't heard it since there's no point in having two albums of the same thing, but if the stereo mix is improved as well I may consider getting it and passing on my current copy.
