Can anyone explain to me what's so great about the debut PFM album?
I mean....it's alright and all but hardly great stuff......is it?

Yes, it is great stuff. Better than just about anything I have heard from British bands.

Me too, Snow. Funny, I was asking myself the exact same question ten minutes ago when I saw someone mentioning Storia as one of the best debut albums. Lots of people seem to really like that album and I don't get it either. For me, the umbilical cord to early King Crimson is a bit too obvious. And it just doesn't... well, I'm not going to be a parrot.
But... I really like Italian prog, and I really like Per Un Amico and L'Isola Di Niente. Those albums are really classic albums for me. L'Isola would be in my all time top 3 of best prog albums. Storia is not on the same level, for me.

Per Un Amico is far better. Both albums are just the tip of a marvellous proggy iceberg though.

I prefer Storia to Amico!
But as far as symphonic Italian Prog , I think PFM is over-rated. I much prefer Quella Vieccha Locanda's two album or Celeste's Principe de un Giorno.
Picchio Dal Pozzo , Perigeo , Pierrot Lunaire and Arti E Mestieri are my fave for the rest.
I am not a Le Orme or Banco DMS fan! Never got into those.

You'll get different answers from different people for that one. Ipersonally like Per Un Amico much more than Storia.

It's my favourite Italian prog album so far ... and one of my favourites of all time ...
The synth chorus (and then that explosive double synth moment) in Impressioni di Settembre is what really sold me at first.
I also love Mussida's lyrical acoustic guitar playing in Dove ... Quando ...
By now, I find virtually all the tracks to be astounding, Fiesta, Hans, etc ... and even though Storia Di Un Minuto is more pastoral and (the also brilliant) Per Un Amico is more progressive album ... it is Storia that occupies the special place in my heart ...
It's also the first Italian prog album I play to novices ... works a charm every time ...

For me Per un Amico and L'Isola di Niente are much better than Storia. I find Storia to be a bit disjointed. It sounds like they were trying way too hard to cram too much in but without any great idea of where they were going.
In fact, I actually thought it was their second album, as it seemed to suffer from classic second album syndrome - over-ambitious, over-reaching and over-wrought.
That's not to say I think it's crap. I really like it, it's just that Per Un Amico and L'Isola are much more solid, fully realised albums.
Listen to Il Banchetto from Per Un Amico and I defy you not to be blown away, especially by the little synth/guitar interlude in the middle and the piano solo. Mega
Likewise with the title track from L'Isola, the opening chords' arrival after the choral section is fantastic - so much energy and dynamism! And the end section of Via Lumiere just rocks.
My advice would be to not let the debut colour your perceptions completely - give albums 2 and 3 a chance, they will win you over.
