Not that much into singers, really, but my favorite one, prog or otherwise, is the late Helmut Koellen of Triumvirat and Jail, and then solo.
Not listed in PA as a solo artist, but with Triumvirat, so i hope that counts. His voice is so deep and emotive and his tone is beautiful. |

Daniel Gildenlow is without a doubt my favorite singer. For me. he is the most expressive singer I have ever heard. Mikael Akerfeldt, Mariusz Duda, Roine Stolt and all of the singers from Moon Safari are among my favorites as well.

Hi,
Fudge me ... unreal!
A list that includes Roy Harper and Peter Hammill?
And really, we should add Bob Dylan ... because these 3 people are the purest wordsmiths and poets right now and have been for sometime. No one can match their integrity, wit and work in their time, and we're past 40 years with them already!
I really feel that too many of the other lyricists are stricktly about the rock music and not the poetry or the wording itself, and as such ... they are rock/pop lyricists, but not writers or poets! ... I realize that there is an intelectual/definition gulf here, but in the end, the work of these three will be remembered far more than most people. Rarely do true writers not, eventually, get recognized in some way.
Rock music, for the most part, has too many roots in pop music, where the lyrics are not important and usually are not considered literature, even if they have allusions to it and such, which is easy to do, if I just mention that these writers are Moby Dick compared to Flipper! Yes, it is a slight judgement value but seriously ... not many of you are taking a whole lot of rap seriously! Edited by moshkito - May 15 2012 at 10:41 |

Oh darn ... I guess that those 3 mentioned above don't sing!
And yes, they would be considered my favorites if I had such a thing. I don't think there are many word poets any better than Peter Hammill out there.

There are two lovely voices that are rarely mentioned, David Gilmour and Justin Hayward.
In Gilmour's case, he can be pretty harsh, like in The Nile Song, spewing venom in Dogs, or tenderly soothing like in Mother. Justin's voice is lovely all the time. And then there's Greg Lake of course, often mentioned but not fully appreciated as I see it. Some people disregard his voice in his latter years, but I think it's rather sexy. Listen to Paper Blood, Black Moon or Touch and Go, and you'll see what I mean. ![]() |

Agree completely with this. I think Gilmour's vocals get a bit underrated because he is better known for his guitarwork. It's pretty amazing the way he can rock out without inhibition on Young Lust and soar beautifully through Comfortably Numb. He has a lovely tone. |
