Topic: Hey guys! I wanted your opinion on something Posted: March 26 2012 at 12:38 |
My name is William and I wanted yall's expert opinion on a song I wrote. Don't worry, I'm not trying to sell, promote, spam etc anything, I merely just want an opinion. It's orchestral experimental rock that fuses orchestra, world music, instrumental guitar, with a hip hop beat. I'm thinking about gigging with this stuff just to see what happens. The ideal situation would be an orchestra, infused with a rock band, and a DJ, and world instruments. Like Yanni on cocaine. I'd literally infuse every genre in one. Where most have guitar solos, id have rap solos. Progressive Post Rock meets World Fusion etc. Obviously, that would take years to get to, but I wanted to get some opinions just to see what you guys thought. I'm hoping this doesn't get moved cause most of the people come here! Thanks for any help in advance.
Keep an open mind when listening to this! ![Shocked Shocked](smileys/smiley3.gif)
So, would you want to see a show that played this kind of music?
(rough demo)

I just listened to "Wake Up" and I have to say I almost tuned out during the first minute and a half. But then -- the music picked up and WOW! it was awesome. The music made me think of a science fiction movie about a deep sea diving team searching for illegal drugs and then finding an old sunken ship with rock star ghosts haha
I think you have the vision and the talent to score a movie or tv show.

Haha! That made me laugh. That is the first I've heard of that description. And ironically, I actually do score music for film/TV, so that would make sense :p
Thanks a million for your time and kind words!

Hi William -- I really like it from when the sound starts to the end. Sounds very familiar -- what have you sampled for it// been particularly inspired by? I would hope that most people here wouldn't need an open mind to enjoy this. Very well put together. And it doesn't sound like a demo to me.
I would go to a show that played this kind of music, for sure. I really like the other ones too.

I wrote a riff on my guitar and when I started writing it, this flood of music just came out. I was inspired by a feeling of waking up, such as, awakening to ones self. The song Wake Up has a deep meaning to it, it's about waking up to the the problems in the world, emotions and insecurities, and one's true self. The other stuff you may have listened to is really old (5 years old) but I just now put it out. Most people don't like this because it's weird. So I just keep this music to myself.
I thank you deeply for the extremely kind words. I rarely ever show my music to anyone honestly. Your words have helped me out, for it helps me build the courage to actually try and gig with this stuff. It's hard to find people who like this kind of stuff.

Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts.. I really enjoy it -- very good indeed. On my third listen now. By the way, I'm sure you'd find people here who, like me, like the other pieces too. Mockup1 is beautiful and cinematic, and should appeal to many who enjoy modern art/academic music and cinematic music. Purple sjies is good, accessible bluesy guitar music. Out and Beyond is very enjoyable rockin' music. I love Intro movie, despite being a very short intro, -- I'm very into such choral sounds/ music. Adventure is terrific. Great variety on display. The majority of people are rather too limited in scope, at least that's how I feel, when it comes to the appreciation of music and other arts. They'll find something weird because they're not attuned to it, or open to different modes of expression than they are most familair with. I feel that my scope of general music appreciation is still far too limited, but my tastes keep expanding as I get exposed to new-to-me things, but I ramble. Wouldn't imagine that people at this site would find it weird, unless they're weird. But perhaps you're just being far too modest.

3rd listen? You must be crazy! Haha nah, again, I rarely show my music to anyone outside of my line of work. I came to these forums to hopefully reach individuals, such as yourself, that would possibly enjoy what I write. Purple Skies and Out and Beyond were written over 5 years ago and I used those for auditions. Intro and Mockup are used for film/tv music work. I try to reach out to a large spectrum. It is my dream to tour as the next Yanni (yanni on cocaine of course haha. My music is twisted) Most people find it weird because its not in the normal spectrum of what they listen to. So, it's weird to have people actually listen to it, ya know? I'm just honored that you enjoyed it.

Progblog has a great imagination ![Big smile Big smile](smileys/smiley4.gif) . Maybe the two of you should collaborate on a movie! But seriously, I really liked Wake Up. The voices in the background were cool. Best of luck with your career William the C.

Just listened to "Wake Up." I like it, kind of like Godspeed You! Black Emperor with guitar solos.

Heard 'Wake Up' and I liked it, man. First, there was silence. Then, I woke up! I like the guitar tone and some of the licks. Very structured for an experimental track. Keep up the good work.

I never heard any of their stuff, so I looked them up. I can see the matching styles, you were right! They are really good.

Yeah exactly! I wanted to wake everyone up. Good note on the structure, cause you are exactly right. It is structured like an orchestral piece. Very good ear.
