I just recently checked out this group.  I think In Abstentia is suberb but was not as impressed with Deadwing.  Can you guys recommend other CD's of theirs.

Try Up The Downstair, it was re-released recently. Or Lightbulb Sun, but that's a little more difficult to find.

Coma Divine, lightbulb sun, stupid dream, well, all of their stuff
is great. Their earlier stuff is more psychedelic while the later
material is pretty much more direct songwriting. If you like
Porcupine Tree you should also check out some of the
members side projects such as Steven Wilson with Blackfield.

As above. Steve Wilsons collaboration album with a guy call Aviv Geffen (or Aviz?) called Blackfield is very good.  The Sky Moves Sideways has some interesting stuff on it as well.

The early studio albums are indeed very psychedelic and are very good.  I recently purchased Voyage 34 and like the ambient sound which is heavily influenced by Pink Floyd and Eno.  Basing an album on an intimate LSD trip is a novel idea.  The voice over adds a lot to the trip.  I would also recommend their live recordings: their is one from Rome and another taken from a Polish radio show.

The only thing that annoys be with Voyage 34 is the synthetic drums, and the very obvious Pink Floyd / The Wall rip off at the beginning of phase 1 ...

Recently listened to The Sky Moves Sideways. Loved it. Get Warzsawa if you like live shows. It is great stuff.

Warzsawa is one of the best live albums I've ever heard, but then I'm biased (check out the avatar)

Good records to start:

Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun - The 2 studio records right before In Absentia, a bit poppier, but still great songs.

Signify - The transition album from PT the psychedelic band to PT the Prog band.

Stars Die - A great 2 CD set of their earlier stuff, unlike many retrospectives, this has great track selection.

Coma Divine - Great live set from the Signify era.

My experience with PT has been less than stellar. I've found them really intensely boring and flavorless until In Absentia, which I think is a very good album.
 
I decided to go back and check if I'd missed something in that earlier material - especially since Richard Barbieri has done nothing else that I don't find at the very least passable, but no luck.
 
There's just something lacking there to me. And the drumming on that live album Coma Divine is the most inappropriate for the material that I think I've ever heard. Hard chop-filled Drum Academy Metal fills over Floydian Pop Rock - annoying and wrong.
 
Anyways, if you're anything at all like me, In Absentia may be as good as it gets.

Hello all,

My first post and maybe my last depending on the answer to my query :-)

I really like Porcupine Tree (Deadwing included, although I just can't get into "On the Sunday Of Life").  I've been a life long Pink Floyd fan and also grew up listening to Dire Straits.  I was wondering if there's anything else out there that's of this genre. I know it's not particularly prog.

I also really like Leaves who I saw just a few nights ago, but they won't fall into the realms of this forum.

I'd appreciate a point in the right direction, either to similar bands or a different forum if I'm in the wrong one

^Try Pineapple Thief. Not very talented musicians or anything, but their labum Vairations on a Dream is definitely pretty good. Very PTree sound.

You can try Signify, it's really great, one of my favourites. Dark Matter is the best track of this album, listen to it to feel just a little of the supremacy of this album

I have 3 albums: Stupid Dream, In Absentia and Lightbulb Sun.

Very good band

My favourite album is Stupid Deam (especially the opening track Even Less)

I have recently bought Deadwing t-shirt although I don't have this album yet.

BTW, this front cover is beautiful   - their best IMO, I love it

I am addicted to listening to Porcupine Tree from the time I saw(in fact-heard) them playing 'live'.

Steve is convincing enough to get you into his music, even though at first glance most of melodies have nothing in common with catchy ones.

Alike most of you I wasn't mesmerized by Deadwing- it compares really unfavourably with
1)'The Sky Moves Sideways'
2)'Lightbulb Sun'
3)'In Absentia' and
4)'Warszawa' (seemingly Steven likes Poles much)

I recently heard in absentia and i was stunned.I also purchased their last album deadwing but didn't have the time to listen to it...

To be honest stupid dream was the only album i had from them and i didn't like it at all.... .But now all my doubts are gone.They seem to be a great band...

you really need to work your way backwards....Lightbulb Sun, Stupid Dream (diff to get hold of, so try the live set Warsawa instead) and Signify...

...you'll find anything from Signify and earlier, quite different; it's more floydesque, with a spacey ambient/ trance quality to it....

...enjoy.

For those who found Deadwing underwhelming, I personally found it to be the paradigm "grower" album. Listen to it on headphones a few times and you will soon appreciate it!
