Topic: Adding sub-genres to RPI? Posted: January 31 2011 at 12:44 |
This has probably been brought up and shot down before but i was just wondering if there was any plans to divide the Rock Progressivo Italiano section into smaller sub-genres. The section to me seems a little to general at the moment which makes it harder to discover new bands with such a mix of Jazz-Fusion, Symphonic and even some Avant bands in there.

By way of background, the RPI sub-genre used to be Italian Symphonic prog (ISP), but was renamed by the site owner at the request of a few high profile members. ISP was generally seen as a specific style distinct from other forms of symphonic prog. I believe the same is not the case for RPI, which has become a catch all for Italian prog (and more) in general.
The problem with the sub-genre as it now stands is that it is not now a style of music at all really, but a geographic sub-split. The obvious solution would be to disperse the bands in it to the musical sub-genre they fit into, without reference to geography. RPI would not then be needed. I don't think that will happen in the immediate future if at all.
I personally would be against any splitting of RPI into sub-genres. It could lead to cases being made for the same thing to be done for other countries. We already record the country of origin of the band, so the "Italian" element of the sub-genre is in my view superfluous.

This is false, but I do not have the energy any more given my current problems. Maybe the other lads have the energy to fight the same asinine battles over and over again, I just can't, especially at the moment. I'm one step from retirement here anyway. Do as you will Bob, Snowie, Hugues, and the rest. Never mind the great influx of excitement and fans the recognition of the legit RPI subgenre have brought this site. Never mind the blogs, musicians, and writers who acknowledge the musical aspects of the RPI scene. All a fantasy. I know this sounds defensive but it really is not. Just being frank. We have worked like hell to build the sub, and it crushes me to see folks at the highest SC/Admin levels of the site still copping this attitude about the "illegitimacy" of the amazing RPI movement. I will not have yet another defense thread. "Disperse" away.
Good luck all.

Those who talks about sub genres: Are yourself really willing to put in those xtra amount of free xtra hours in fragmenting the already fine subgenres ? Are you willing to put in these 100 x free manhours, topographicbroadways ?
In a dying scene, I also happens to think our work, unpaid work, is much better used somewhere else than establishing sub genres within sub genres who just makes ProgArchives more difficult to understand and more an elitist exlusive club for the very few. That is not serving a struggling, dying progressive rock scene. Promotion of the bands and the scene by reviewing albums and generally be supportive towards the bands is what the scene needs. Status quo within the RPI genre in ProgArchives is what I would request. ............ And please do not take this as a personal attack, topographicbroadways.

To me the ISP bands always had a very strong stylistical connection, a unique flavour to their (indeed somewhat eclectic) sound. It always made sense to me as a genre. Saying that ISP/RPI has just a geographic logic is not something that I'd ever agree with. There are tons of Italian bands in the archives, try putting ZU, Yugen, Ephel Duath, Fleshgod Apocalypse, French Teen Idol, Hydrus and Albergo Intergalattico Spaziale in the same page with PFM, Banco and Le Orme and see what sense that makes as a genre! On the other hand, saying that there are some bands in ISP/RPI who are in there just because they're Italian and they don't share the same style with the classic RPI core, well, that does make sense and it could be discussed, but it does not imply RPI is outdated. Not at all.

Sorry Jim, it was not my intention to open old wounds.
By all means state your case robustly. Perhaps you could offer your own thoughts on the request in the original post here.

Technically, RPI could be split into several smaller subsets, but that goes for every genre on ProgArchives.
I guess the best solution is to check the reviews/samples to get a feel about a certain band.
