Topic: How many Hardcore DT fans??? Posted: June 09 2005 at 13:01 |
Octavarium jumps to no 45 in the all time greatest list in a couple of
days!!! I like DT but I don't understand how this could happen so
quickly.

I'm sitting here beneath my three DT posters, 11 albums and 2 DVDs ... Am I a hardcore fan?
I think YES, but not if the definition of hardcore fan includes that I don't appreciate other genres.

I have almost all (at least the studio + some live + 1 DVD) albums from them in my collection, but still don't regard myself a hardcore fan! I think you just should have them but that doesn't mean to be a fan. I have many bands with their full discography in my collection (of course not all of them in originals, only from Flower Kings ). Doesn't mean anything!

Yeah, your hardcore, but a nice one I think.
I just didn't get how they could go up and down in the charts so fast???

I wouldn't consider myself "hardcore" in the way I think you're presenting it. I can see holes and flaws in Octavarium. It'd be very, very lucky to get a 4 star review from myself.
However, I do have 12 CD's, 3 DVD's and a vast number of fanclub/bootleg CD's, so i'm quite a big fan. Just not a stubborn fan.

So if someone as dedicated to DT as you(you basically have their
collection) isn't giving Octavarium 5 stars, where are they all coming
from?

Ok
So would it be fair to say that there are 4 types out there.
1. Doesn't like anything remotely associated with metal. (total non DT)
2. Can take it or leave (maybe has one or two albums/maybe still deciding)
3. Probably most of us - really like the band and have most of their
albums but have eclectic musical tastes ranging across the spectrum and
will give an album a fair go before passing judgment for any genre
and
4. Spectral apparitions that invade websites and push the ratings up on
DT in order to cause chaos, confusion and flamewars with 'oldprog metal
haters' and 'DT officianados'.
or
5. As prog is considered 'anti- establishment' by some, could this be a
CIA plot to unsettle members causing them, during times of emotive
outburst to, give away their secret thoughts and reveal their hostility
for government plans to comply with order 90125.
or...its an experiment

yeah, like I think at one point (must have been an accident) it was no
13 or something then back down in the late 40s and has since sped into
the 20s. It like wall street on uppers and downers.

Maybe i'm blinded by the sheer brilliance of Room V (which coincidentally arrived the same day). But I just disagree with most reviews. The album is good, yes. But a Prog Masterpiece? Get outta town. I hate all these blind fanboys (the same ones who loved ToT) who can't see flaws.
I like the album, it's decent. I just feel some people are over-rating it.

I agree, Room V is awesome. Octavarium is a 4 star album to me (very good, but not essential). Maybe it's a non-essential masterpiece.
It's fundamental flaw might be that it still contains many elements of the typical DT style that many hoped would progress.
