Topic: Brand New scratched vinyls Posted: October 22 2010 at 11:49 |
Last week I got by mail a new vinyl I've ordered, the new album from Italian band 'Areknames', 'In case of loss'.
The vinyl supposed to be new from the factory, and indeed arrived sealed, but inside there where some 'nice' and memorable scratches add to the music... in fact this scratches could be shown on the record in everyone eye...
Well, you say, contact with the store and ask to replace the deffected vinyl with a new one...
The thing is, this is not the first time it happens. in fact, when I look over my recent vynil purchases, I find out that MANY of them where scratched, and replacement did not solve the problem.
Example: I ordered two new vynil re-issued of Gentle Giant discography, 'Free hand', and 'Power and the glory'. While 'Power and glory' was just fine, 'Free hand' arrived scrached. I ask Amazon for replacement, and after thier 'procedure' of replace deffected stuff, they send me another copy. This copy was lessed scratcehd, but still... I just gave up.
I suspect that there is not qualiy ensurance for vinyls like the old days, where new vinyl was realy new.
I doubt if to order vinyls anymore.
Did it happen to you also? what do you think and know, vinyl junkies...
I have to say this thread is for vinyl ensusiasts only. Please don't make notes here such as 'you should have order CD's at first place, its much better', etc...
Please respond.

Admin: Moved to Tech Talk - since it's mainly about the quality of vinyl, not about prog or music per se.

On another note, I have no idea. Delivery problems? Also, do you have a really big, vinyl-compatible letterbox? The drop through a letterbox could scratch things... my jewel cases often suffer a similar fate. Or, do you have a normal sized letterbox, but when you get your vinyl, it's been folded in half by the mailman? That could cause it. Finally, are you hands covered in spikes? Well, that's me all out of ideas. |

Reminds me of line in a Python sketch: " I will not buy this record it is scratched."
Yeah, the postal employee that fills the apartment mail boxes will pretty much cram in as much as possible unceremoniously. But what do I know? Maybe there is some kind of ceremony involved. |

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I ordered from two different shops. I dont think it's the shop.
In both cases the vinyls comes with good thick package.
I wonder if the demage is caoused because of delivery problems, not sure at all... I suspect the vinyls are demaged by the facyory, press etc. and no one care for not letting such vynils out.

I will not buy this record; it is scratched.
Sorry, could not resist. My serious advice would be to get used to 21st century technology. EDIT: And I hadn't even read Slartibartfast's post. Great minds think alike! Edited by Mr ProgFreak - October 22 2010 at 13:20 |

Ehh, I'd go for delivery problems. I think they can be very ham-handed. I very much doubt it's factory problems. Consider this; 1) Present day vinyls are pretty much exclusively marketed to audiophiles and collecters. 2) Audiophiles and collecters do not like scratches at all I doubt they would be careless in the factory. |

I will not buy zis tobacconist, IT is scratched
i buy a lot of new vinyl and i have very little problem with it; some limited italian pressing runs 2000-2005ish had some problems where there were pressing faults throughout the whole batch (Mellow records for one..)
Cardinal Biggles, read the charges...

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. This was the case in GG's 'Free hand'. The second vinyl I got is scrached at the same tracks in the same way, but less.

It also depends on what you mean by 'Scratched'.. If they are physically scratched, that can only be done by 'someone' or 'something'- a physical process.. i you mean the record 'clicks' 'pops' 'jumps' or 'sticks' that could just be 'stuff' (dust, debris from pressing, even paper fibre from poor quality inners) on the surface so do check & maybe carefully clean the record. Jumps and sticks, though, are often caused by pressing faults (but can also be caused by your tone arm not being set up properly). Sometimes marks are visible on the surface of the vinyl which are just caused by the pressing process and usually have little or no effect (occasionally they cause 'crackles' & 'hissing')
Vinyl generally is very very much superior to how it used to be (for lots of reasons) and 'whole pressing defects are very, very rare indeed- i wouldnt be put off buying vinyl but do check your deck first & all those other things and if the records are defective demand your money back & invest in a quality 2nd hand copy!
