Topic: For Christian prog listeners... Posted: July 22 2010 at 12:09 |
I am in a local band that just released an album. I am trying to get some "market research" on who our style appeals to. I would appreciate some feedback from prog-people on what our new album sounds like, and what you like and don't like about the style or songs.
The band's website is www.anewcreationband.com. I have been told that we sound like Kansas. You can probably take that with a grain of salt.
I'm just looking for some feedback, and not shameless self-promotion. You can also listen to some songs on iTunes; just search "A New Creation - Unravel."
Thanks ahead of time!

Very good rock music, people!
I can confidently say your music probably won't appeal to too many folks around here (both due to the pop-rock structures and- sadly- due to the lyrical content).
However, I enjoyed myself and stuck around for all the songs that came up on your website. I attended a Christian college for a year and was forced to listen to Christian music everyday (not exclusively, but we had mandatory chapel services among other things), and so I became even more familiar with nearly every Christian music cliche there was. I'm pleased to say I didn't hear much of that- I heard upbeat, cheerful, joyful praise.
The harmonies and piano toward the end of "Runaway" are wonderful- the best moment for me.
As for your target audience, I think that's probably clear- churches with youth groups. I don't think you'll find too much of an audience in bars or nightclubs. If you're established, check out Christian youth camps and youth retreats.
I do see you'll be playing "Carry On Wayward Son." So your band has good taste as well...

Thanks for the input! Sadly, we are pretty much in a niche market with Christian music, but our prog tendencies are coming out especially with the new songs we are working on now.
Our only true "Progressive" song on our current disc is called "Unravel" which features some dueling guitar/synth leads and arpeggios, among with a 5/4 groove later in the song. Plus, it is the only song we have written thus far that approaches the 8-minute mark.
But yes, we most certainly do love Kansas around here.;-)

Kansas is my favorite band.
You guys are good...believe me...I've been in some lousy rock bands. Y'all sound good!
PM sent by the way.

Thanks, I'm sure the band will appreciate it. Now if we can just start sounding like Riverside...haha.
