Can we reccomend some good prog bands?? Can a dog lick it's own nuts?? Yes to both.. Hi & welcome warwick_chick. I too reccomend Rush if you like Dream Theater. They are much better IMO, although DT do have their moments ( I love 'Images & words' Good album, if you ignore some of the cheese) Also, with suggested albums.. Genesis (A Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, Foxtrot) Genesis are less 'immediate' than Rush. Some argue that Rush are not strictly a prog band, more 'Art rock' Most prog requires patience in the listerner. Not much prog will immediately grab you. It slowly takes hold until it controls your every move.. King Crimson (Red, In the Court of the Crimson King) Not one of my fave prog groups. They are very 'out there' and quite experimental, but they are a good example of a guitar based prog band you may enjoy. Red is a fine prog ROCK album. Marillion (Script for a jesters tear, Fugazi, Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws) One of the 'neo' prog bands that emerged in the early '80s. Well played, well produced, great songs. Inspired by the prog giants of the 70's but with their own magic added. If you are young - to me that means under 30 - you may find the 80's production preferable to the old school production. At least until you find your 'prog legs' IQ (Dark Matter, Subterranea, Ever) Same reasons as Marillion It Bites (Once around the world, Eat me in St Louis) Same as above Happy Listerning! If you like Symphony X and DT, try: Threshold, Vanden Plas, Shadow Gallery, Evergrey, Pain Of Salvation & Poverty's No Crime. All of those bands, like Symphony X and SB now happen to be on the 'Inside Out' record label, whose website you can check out at www.insideout.de (no I don't work for them!!) Hope you enjoy the site...

warwick_chick.. Dont get too bogged down in all this prog metal nonesense. Expand your horizons, and embrace the symphonic end of the genre.. But seriously, read the reviews and look at all the lists of bands in the archives. There's so much listed there. Some reviews are more helpful than others, but generally this site is a really good source of information on prog rock of all kinds. You can also write reviews about any albums you like and share your views that way.

Try Evergrey, Threshold, Therion, Pain of Salvation and Liquid Tension Experiment. All in all excellent stuff, especially Pain of Salvation and Evergrey.
I'd also highly reccomend King Crimson's "Red", excellent album. |

Well, there's old school (70s) and new school (post 70s). For the 70s I’d check out Yes (Fragile or Close to the Edge) Genesis (Seconds Out) Emerson, For new school, my faves are: Cario ( Citizen Cain (Somewhere But Yesterday) IQ (Ever) Little Atlas (Wanderlust)
