Yes, I said Gorillaz. Am i the only one who considers them prog? I saw them recently at Coachella and I've been obsessed since. their sound is infused with funk, dub, pop, rock, electronic, R&B, dance, rap, soul and almost everything good. It Is the brainchild of Damon Albarn formally of Blur (not prog). They have been active since 1998 and always top charts. They are seen as this mainstream pop group with no talent and nothing but studio magic. Originally, they weren't showing their faces, only animated images, and they never played live until a point. live shows still remain rare, and when they do there is usually a screen in front of them. yeah, they aren't for the average prog ear, but i think they fit the criteria.

I think it is safe to say that you are, indeed, the only person in the world with this opinion. |

They're fantastic, and very creative. They've made some of the best original music of the past decade. (and this decade for that matter)
But they're not prog, not in the slightest. |

I was almost forced to listen Gorillaz, when I went on a car trip with a friend his wife and daughter plus my ex girlfriend and her 9 years daughter, the two girls played this all the road (5 hours trip), and was pleasently surprised, they are quite good, or at least beter than 99% of today's mainstream.
But Prog?
Not 100% Prog as Nevbox said, the problem is that not even 0.1% Prog Related.

Creative does not equal prog. They're an above average pop group. Not even slightly prog though.

I hadn't heard music by this band before and only vaguely recognised the name, but thought it would be fun to share some links relating it to prog.

If you mean at PA, then it's quite likely. If you mean in the world, then no, you're not the only one. Prog means different things to different people and I rather think that the prog term should be shot and put out of its misery -- the term is so overused and abused, and it does not leave me amused. This site could continue as Prog Archives for sentimental (and financial) reasons. Of course there is such a thing as Prog, but it's too loose a term to be of much value to me to describe such disparate music at, and considerable for, PA. |

Ahem, don't like to be in opposition, but logical answer would be: "No, there is too few of you out there". I don't support them though, but there is more people like him who support Gorilazz. |

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

I honestly disagree with this position.
It's true that the term Prog is vague and that is oversused, specially by people who don't have the slightest idea what Prog is, but changing the name would be equally to killing it.
People love it because they have at least an idea what it is and reminds of iconic bands, plus the fact that any term would also be inaccurate and in some moment overused.
Lets keep the term but not make it so vague that any band could be added.
Iván
