I'm guessing Yamazaki 18 y could be in your top 10 !

I still have to try that one ( any many more !! ) but it is quite expensive here in Holland!!

Your list is the one of a Spey Valley or Highland single malt drinker, which is also my preference,

but I dislike strongly the Isles whiskey >>> just too smoked up and peaty >>> I feel I'm drinking from an ashtray  >> the worst are Lagavulin and Laphroiac (however it's spelled)

Personally the Macallan 21 years is my fave,

but I also love Glenmorangie (I like these cask novelties to)

Glenfiddich is priobably the purest of them malts, since it's diluted with the same spring water thanb its made of...... all the others are cut downin the Glasgow bottling plants.

My own ten years old guide at http://www.toroddfuglesteg.com/whiskytrail.html

I have visited most of the distilleries, but I hardly ever drink. I have a failing heart and am awaiting a major heart surgery in December.

But I love a malt whisky in the autumn when the rain is lashing down at my castle. My favorites are Highland Park 12 years old, Oban 14 years old, Bowmore 12 years old, Laphroaig 10 years old, Balvenie 10 years old and Glenfiddich 12 years old.

I am not fond of these 15 years and older whiskies. Too much wood in my opinion. If I want a bottle of sherry, I buy a bottle of sherry for a tenner. Not a 40 years old Glensomething for hundredandfifty pounds. The taste is more or less the same.

I love to visit the remote distilleries on my pushbike though. The scenery is fantastic. In particular; Islay was incredible on my pushbike. That is a big part of the whole whisky experienc, in my view.

You've a similar palate to mine it would appear - Oban 14 yr old is probably my favorite, followed by the Balvenie 10 yr old Founders Reserve, although their 12 year old Doublewood is well worth a tipple. You don't see it around much, but I am fond of the Glenfiddich Caoran Reserve, which is as smooth as they come.

Like Hughes though, I cannot stand the peaty smokey malts - the worst I came acfross was Tobermory - Bleagh!

Agreed, those are all very nice. I'll add Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Aberlour 10 y.o. and Isle of Jura 10 y.o.

I went to a whisky taste evening with some friends some years ago in the Netherlands.
I only remember Bruichladdich and Talisker, and forgot about the rest.
I'm afraid I didn't go any further with whiskies, though, and collected wine instead.

Another thumbs up for Isle of Jura.  A good one if you prefer your scotch on the milder side.

Hey, anyone tried Loch Dhu?

It's been a few years for me.  I see it's gotten much more pricier. Not technically a scotch, I guess though I bought it from the scotch section.

I cycled past Talisker ten years ago (on Skye) and had a taste of their water. There was not much difference between the water and the whisky. The water was almost undrinkable.

I also took a sniff and a short mouthfull of the peat outside the  Laphroaig distillery. The taste of medicine (iodine) was almost over-powering.

The point I want to make is that single malts is products of their environment. Show me a picture of the distillery and the surrounding area and I will tell you how the whisky taste. This makes single malts true products of the nature.

Loch Dhu 10 Year old

Isle Of Jura.......... what an island !!! Have a look at the pictures. George Orwell wrote "1984" there. My jaw dropped to the floor when I passed the island on my way on a ferry to Islay last year. The whisky is great too. It think it is probably the best value for money single malt out there. The price is almost too low and people tends to snub it and go for a more expensive brand.

Loch Dhu was a horrible whisky and I am glad it is discontinued.

I sort of agree with this - in a bind test, I'd probably recognize just the origin but not the distiller, but the cask it comes in is also important as well in the taste.

Glenmorangie is putting out a package of single malts over Sherry, Port, Grappa and Sauterne cask and the difference is still amazing.

This is probably the best I've ever had, but mind you I stick to beer mostly:

I may come across as a complete philistine, but I think that single malts are often vastly over-rated and over-priced.

I actually prefer a good blended Scotch whisky such as Bell's or Famous Grouse - they are much cheaper yet still have full complex flavours.

The bargain store Aldi do a really good 8 year old blended whisky called Highland Black and it's only £10.99 a bottle, but it is smooth, mellow, fully rounded (with a slight peaty finish) and utterly delicious.
