Topic: Porcupine Tree : San Francisco Posted: September 19 2009 at 15:08 |
I fought my way through the drug dealers, crack addicts and pimps to get to the Warfield. Its a great venue but not in a nice area, especially after dark. I managed to get pretty near the front and it was warm and clammy but people were generally well behaved (no mosh pit here).
The support act was just plain strange. He was OK for 10 minutes or so but a bit much for 1/2 hour. He was funny and his facial expressions a treat but music didnt do much for me.
Porcupine Tree sounded great and the new album went down pretty good live. I have been listening to it a lot this week so the tracks were familiar especially the extended version of Time flies which really hit the spot. I thought Wesley was on particularily good form.
After a 10 minute break they did a set of the older stuff but managed to avoid playing any of my all time favorites. This second set went down much better with the audience and they were pretty heavy. I really enjoyed this set with the exception of the track before the encore which I didnt recognize. Nice session for the encore and they finished with Trains which was a real crowd favorite.
Not the best Porcupine Tree gig I have been to but still very good.

I nearly forgot. The band were way over obsessed with video recording equipment. I even saw one lady get thrown out for filming with what looked like her cell phone. Surely a few vids on youtube cant do any harm.

Hey, I went to this too. Where were you? I was on the far right hanging on to the stage, right in front of Collin. And you're right, Market is a SCARY place after dark.

Prrrrrrrrrfffffffff... I'd take Haight St over Market ANY day. Market is filled with crackheads and the mentally insane, Haight is filled with hippies and weedeaters who, despite being homeless and crazy are actually fairly friendly. Haight is one of my favorite places on Earth man... Amoeba! Cha Cha Cha's! What more could you ask for than my favorite store (nay, place) and my favorite restaurant within spitting distance of each other???

true, Amoeba is a treasure, and Cha Cha Cha has a good roast pork sandwich. Don't know about the rose-colored vision of Haight St though, it used to be fun but now I just wanna get outta there as soon as I can (though Market is no better) anyone go to the Terminator Club reunion gigs? I never hung out there but Anvil Chorus played and are about to release a CD after 25 years

Hey Jake Kobrin you didn't happen to be the one headbanging the entire concert were you? if so i was like five feet behind you. it was an awesome show, just wish they played Anesthetize in it's entirety but i can understand why they didn't as it would take up a third of the second half of the show.

I "headbung"only during the heavy parts like Circle of Manias, Anesthetized, Mother and Child Divided, etc but when I headbang I headbang like I mean it hahaha. That may have been/probably was me, it seemed like I was one of the few people headbanging in the entire venue. Short chubby guy, long blonde hair, Opeth Still Life shirt? On the left was a bald guy with an In Absentia shirt and on the right was an older guy with longish black hair?

Montreal show was amazing... one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I was roughly 10 feet from Mr. Wilson!!!
King's X opened for them, and to be honest, I'm not a large fan... They
rock ok, but doesn't keep me interested (or my head bobbing for that
matter!)
The first set of PT consisted of the entire first CD of The Incident. I
didn't like the CD initially when I heard it, but hearing it live
changed my opinion... It was played so well... so much energy... so
many cool videos!
The second set consisted of a whole slew of medleys that blew my mind
away (the best being Russia's on Ice that turned into Anesthetize and
Strip the Soul turning into .3)
Encore was The Sound of Muzak and Trains! Amazing show... on par or better than anything I've seen before. [Me (tall guy) and friends with King's X]
