If memory serves, vinyl and CD have different covers.

I believe the second one is the CD version, because that's the only one I've never seen

It's the re-release cover. No reason really, probably just to show the difference. Riggs proberly painted two versions and they were nice enough to use both.

No, the first one is the true one, the second is not on CD version, look at their official site, maybe is some kind of bootleg cover art if exists something like that. The first one is the original cover art.

Bootleg? Then how come I have it as part of their official remaster series which I bought at bloody HMV? TongueWink

The Americas are known for being squeemish. Hell, to buy the correct cover for Motley Crue's "Shout At The Devil" you have to go to europe. This is probably the American version

I've never seen the second one. my CD cover  has the first one. I also believe that it must be some sort  of censured version. it'd be nice to find out what's the true about this.

Wikipedia has some info on the different album covers but doesn't really explain why...

Quote Two versions of the cover exist. The original 1990 version has Eddie bursting from his grave and grabbing the grave-digger by the neck. The cover was altered for the 1998 re-release. In this version the grave-digger is absent. The original cover can still be seen on the disc's label, however. Additionally an inscription was added to the plaque on the tomb, which reads After the Daylight, The Night of Pain, That is not Dead, Which Can Rise Again. The picture disc LP shows Eddie firing a weapon made of four machine guns (a reference to the album's opening track, "Tailgunner"). It has the original cover on side 2.

I have the first one (with the gravedigger) and the vinyl was color blue.

Also it came with a poster

maybe it's a collector item's

I had an LP (after buying CD I gave LP to one of my friends) and it was something like "Eddie firing a weapon". Don't remember well, but it seems Eddie was painted on yellow background. Unfortunately I could not find that picture on the web.

The first Maiden album also had its cover redesigned when it was reissued.  They decided to make Eddie look the way he looks on all the other Maiden sleeves.

My guess is that they just thought that the grave digger looked kind of dumb and messed up an otherwise good looking cover. I like the re-release version better. (Possibly because that's the one I have and am used to.) The Number of the Beast remaster also has a bit different cover, the colours are darker. I think I've heard that that was the way it was supposed to be on the original release but the cover printing company messed the colours up.
