FINE -_- I'll be the first fanboy to say Petrucci.
Also, Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth is a great guitar player and genius song writer, and I've recently been wowed by the newest Opeth guitarist [and ex-Arch Enemy guitarist] Frederick Akesson. Good stuff. Now its probably wayy to early to consider Paul and Dustie from BTBAM GODS, but I'd say they have potential and are young guitar players on their way to prog fame. It depends what you like. Do you want a zillion notes per second? Then listen to dream theater. Do you like lots of emotion? Then check out Camel. do you like a folksy/rootsy rock? Jethro Tull. Do you want some dissonant speed? Alan Holdsworth is your man.
And so on and so forth.... There really are no bad guitarrists in prog. They're all "BAD". |

You might also try Steve Vai. Many people here would say he isn't prog, but he's proggy enough to be on the archives. He's a shredder, and what I've heard from him is pretty good.

Kinda except Wilsin is much more a song writer than a great guitar player. Don't get me wrong, he can play, but he doesn't always write the most fitting guitar solos and isn't a chops master. Paul Waggoner and Dustie Waring, hell yeah ![]() As some dude abive mentioned, Vai. Incredible composer and guitarist. Vai's playing is some of the most deep and emotional playing to me, I just love it. Not prog as such, but he did teach Vai, Joe Satriani. Emotion, insane chops and one of the most innovative players ever, no doubt. I absolutely adore Holdsworth's playing. Such deep emotional content, and some of the most blazing chops on the planet too. Michael Romeo, wow. Sweep picking/Legato/Tapping combination runs to completely obliterate your mind, and great feeling in his playing too. Mikael isn't the most technical, but he is certainly a riffmeister and can play some pretty mean solos as well. Frederik Akkeson is definitely one too check out too, great virtuoso. Chuck Schuldiner from Death, too frequently overlooked, but a genius as his craft. Tim Miller and Luke Hoskin from PTH, considering how young they are, are amazing players and. Insane rhythm and lead chops and always playing for the song. Guys from Meshuggah, also of note. Off the top of my head, can't think of anyone else |

Dave Gilmour, Roine Stolt of Flower Kings and Steve Howe of Yes, to name but 3.
Finest guitarist of the lot surely has to be Joe Satriani. Not really prog I suppose, but if anyone can make a guitar talk, it's him.
