I was listening to Yes' Relayer album and couldn't help thinking 'this album wouldn't sound the same without that amazing silvery painting on the cover', Rodger dean really did do a glorious job on that one and created what i think is one of the greatest and most original looking album covers of all time

then that got me thinking about all the album covers that stick in my head every second i listen to the album that they come from, like King Crimson's 'In the court of the Crimson King'

So what album covers do you think are really important to the record as a whole?  what album covers do you think would change the way the record felt if the cover its self was changed?

I think that Tales From Topographic Oceans and Relayer reflects accurately the sensation of the music inside...

And maybe you could check the Koenjihyakkei album covers, they are very close to the music LOL

The 70s and 80s metal band Cirith Ungol. It's some of the most awesome D&D-type paintings, they make me want to roll some dice

Otherwise, Floyd have always excelled at album covers, peaking with Wish You Were Here, King Crimson have pulled off a few that are extremely important to the feel (Lizard, Discipline), but aren't as exceptional in themselves.

I always found pick floyd covers represent the bad very well sometimes the covers represent that style on the album (for me anyway)

Tarkus by ELP really looks like the music sounds, and in fact the gatefold album with a series of illustrations was meant to supplement the storyline.
 
I also love the Trick of the Tail cover by Genesis, with the very well done illustrations that represent each song-----one of the many reasons why that outstanding album is such a true classic of progressive music.

Most Paul Whitehead covers are very descriptive, just look at Nursery Crymne or Foxtrot, both are incredibly descriptive.
 
Also an album as Danger Money which not only describes the concept, but the modern photo describes a modern approach to Symphonic.
 
All Kim Poor's drawings for Hackett's albums.

Agree with mi amigo Ivan.
HACKETT'S cover for ''the voyage of the acolyte'' matches perfectly the music
 
Also the covers of the first 5 AMON DUUL 2 are perfect for their music.
However the trophy goes for ROGER DEAN which added some mystic to YESmusic.....Imagine the design of 90215 covering TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANSLOL
 
Also PAWN HEARTS cover from VDGG matches the athmosphere of the album, the same goes for ARGUS from WISHBONE ASH and TIME HONOURED GHOSTS from BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST.
