I think the constant blind fanaticism of a handful of members alienates the majority against the bands they think their are "marketing". Construcitve crisicism of their favourites from time to time would show that they actually think about what they hear and see.
It's like not telling you're best friend when they have a bogie hanging from their nose!

Strange as it may be I agree with you Reed
There's a difference between talking about your favorite BANDS (because that's why we are here) and promoting a determined one, and even worst if reaching the level of insulting anyone who dares to dislike them.
I couldn't care less who dislikes Genesis, I like them and it's enough for me, this is not a popularity contest, if someone hates Genesis, he/she is loosing a great part of prog history, but it's his/her problem and his/her valid choice.
I admit that SEBTP and ATOTT are far from being my favorite albums, but most ELP fans keep promoting Love Beach and refuse to admit it's not good (My less polite opinion is even harder).
Some people says for example Steve Howe is better than Steve Hackett, that's not accurate , but is valid, other say Keith Emerson wipes the floor with Tony Banks, that's incorrect IMO.

I think there's a line somewhere between helpful promotion and spamming promotion, and it depends on which one the person is doing.
If they are promoting helpfully--which to me is giving a recommendation of their favorite bands to others, especially if the bands are lesser known and NEED this promotion in order for most people to be aware of them, then I have no problem. I will recommend things to people based on what I know of their tastes, I'll answer their questions if they want help, and occasionally I might post a discussion thread. (Although I rarely start my own threads.)
But if they are promoting...er...spamfully--that is clogging up any and every thread about their band, attacking those who don't share their taste, and otherwise beating a dead horse when others have made it very clear that they're sick to death of it, I don't think that's necessary at all.

Absolutely agreed FloydWright! Sorry I just read it today (it's in the wrong section in my opinion!)
