I heard about this band over on the DT boards. Unexpect, from Canada.
I watched the video and it reminded me a lot of Zeuhl, specifically magma, but really metal.
I think it is pretty interesting.

Anyone ever heard of any other bands doing Zeuhl Metal type stuff?

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Ruins have no guitarist and Tatty Yo wouldn't dare to lay down as something as boring as a metal drum beat =P

Never heard Unexpect, I'll go look

Unexpect is indeed a superb band. "In A Flesh Aquarium" (which is not their first album, despite what the DT site claims) is a stunningly good album.

No matters, they are under Zeuhl in my collection Smile

I really cannot think of any example. There are several of the Zeuhl bands with metallic aesthetics - in particular the Japanese ones - both Happy Family and Bondage Fruit are highly guitar orientated, but compositional/structure wise they are leagues away from metal. I had not heard Unexpect before, but from viddying their video, they appeared more inline with the Mr Bungle / Sleeptime league of gentlemen.

Wow, I don't know if I'd call them Zeuhl, but I'm an instant fan.Clap

They remind me of a French band I found on mp3.com several years ago called Tercia. These guys are a bit tighter. Fabulous stuff.

Wow, I got me some new favorite metal band!!!
Ah, I love this... now the Sleepys are begining to influence other bands... sometimes the world is so beautiful.

Anyone else noticed that the bass riff at the begining sounds slightly like Tool Schism?

Its cool to see some love. The dt-boards seemed to hate them completly

Unexpect doesn't really sound like Zeuhl to my ears.  Sounds just like Sleepytime (from what I've heard anyways), but not Zeuhl.

Of course you could also stop this desperate attempt at pidgeon-holing and just call them "Experimental/Avant-Garde" ...

Or we could go to ratingsfreak.com and pigeonhole the hell out of them with all sorts of tags.....

^ having a lot of tags at your disposal does not necessarily mean you have to pidgeon-hole ... some tags are more specific, some are more general.Smile

^ Thanks! You haven't rated/tagged too many albums though which tells me you're probably not too much into the other features of the site except the Last.fm signature image. Which is perfectly fine - I'm just noticing.Wink

Cerebus Effect are sometimes tagged as Canterbury Metal, but there's a definite Zeuhl influence in there as well.

I just got my hands on In a Flesh Aquarium, Unexpect album... it´s quite extreme! Nothing is done twice, it´s on constante change... it might get a bit too metal at times, but it´s definitly interesting. I will let you know with a future review, once I have digested the album fully
