Topic: maggie reilly or annie haslam? Posted: March 04 2005 at 01:12 |
Well, that's a silly question when you only know annie, but it becomes pretty non obvious when you know both of them! they both have a solo career.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmm....very hard choice indeed!
annie is more classical, while maggie is more ethereal
on the other hand, annie has a wider range...
seriously, i think it is very hard to compare the REAL 2 best prog female singers!
it is like to compare jaco pastorius and jeff berlin on bass!
what is your opinion? If you answer me Annie hands down, then i think you don't know very well the other madame!

The Maggie's voice seems a little bit more perfect to me.
Though I guess that the Woman in Prog #1 is Kate Bush

I voted for Annie as I have her more Rennaisance than anything Reilly has been involved in.
I love AH's voice, but my hunch is that MR may have better intonation. One of my favourite prog albums of the 70's is 'Ashes are Burning' by Rennaisance, but I have to admit that Haslams voice is quite badly flat on some songs. In particular, 'At the harbour' If I had been the producer I would have probably pushed for them to re-record the vocals for that song.
Its still a great song and her voice is lovely nonetheless.

Although Annie is a perfect, great singer, my personal favourite is Reilly because of the sweetness in her voice.

I picked Annie, though neither really sets me on fire.
But will anyone confirm my belief that Maggie Reilly and the singer for Magenta sound amazingly similar?

Sorry to answer before Emperor had the chance, but....

Swinton you old softie you..
It seems we have a great romantic poet in the making...
I once read an interview with Kronos, singer/bass player with black metal heroes Venom. He was a huge Kate Bush fan and once travelled from Newcastle to some other town where Kate was doing a record signing. At the signing she kissed him on the cheek wherapon he burst into tears and walked home 20 miles in the rain.

just slightly: christina has tremolos in her voice, and she has a lesser sweet perfect tone. she sing extremely well, but you have to understand that maggie is just THE reference in singing.
after having read the posts , i think my choice goes for annie reilly, euh...sorry: maggie haslam!
don't put kate bush in the same bag! i love kate bush, she sing very well, but she sounds like an amateur compared to those 2 madames!

Reilly for me.
Haslam has a great voice, and has done much more in a prog context, but I think Reilly's voice is slightly the better. Apart from her work with Mike Oldfield, her solo stuff is well worth seeking out.
