have a quick listen at http://www.myspace.com/shadowcircus. We're about to finish recording our first prog rock album, and I'm wondering, is this symphonic, retro, neo, etc.?

Wow, thanks so much! Actually, only one track is instrumental, the rest have vocals...Wake of a Dancing Flame has a long Hammond intro, but other than that, there are vocals on everything... So retro-symphonic is the way to go? |

Id say yes. Its normally a genre that is not very innovative but generally has a very impressive level of musicianship, good songs and a lot of keys. And thats pretty much what I just heard...and liked a lot!!! A question, will you release this album only thrue say "legal" ways, such as a record company or will you also post it in the web so it can be downloaded? Cause I know if you just take the first choice, I wont be able to get it cause of the high price and Im pretty interested in listening the whole thing. |

Wow, I'm still so glad you like it, I was expectig there to be a hair-splitting battle of sub-genre experts!
We will definitely have it available for purchase as downloadable files...EVentually we will shoot for iTunes, but I'm hearing good things about MySongStore.com...also, Myspace is supposed to begin offering a service to charge for high-quality downloads soon. We should have it ready for purchase by Thanksgiving, barring anything unpredictable...I'll definitely post here as soon as it's all done. Also, if you write a review for us on here somewhere, I will send you a copy for free! :-) |

Haven't listened to all the songs enough yet, but of your choices I'd say retro is the most fitting as you have elements of various subgenres (or "all of the above")
 .It really is a mixed bag, and that's good -- 70's and 80's influences (mixed bag at this site might equal Art Rock but I don't think I'd use that to describe your music). Might call "Find Your Way" symph, the ELPish "Shadow Circus" is in the classic 70's rock vein (symph inspired). "Dancing Flame" is more Neo-Prog, and "Radio People" with it's New Wave influence as well as 70's elements could be classified Neo-Prog. Very good music. Really enjoyed it. Thank you, also! Maybe I should just go forward with "Progressive Rock", and let people extrapolate from it what they will...I suppose bands like Spock's Beard and Flower Kings fall into a similar category...one tune can be symph, and the next one could even be bluesy or whatever... |

It seems to me like you don't really fit in one genre since there is your heavy ELP and Yes influence that is also mixed with more mainstream '70s rock, some jazz, and neo-prog. So I would advise against declaring yourself any specific sub-genre; I don't think pigeonholing yourself works very well anyway. But of course, don't overdo and be stupid like Steve Wilson, who says he makes "Porcupine Tree music". No, Steve, you make space rock that has a heavy Pink Floyd influence and adds metal.
I didn't like it all that much (but don't mind me, I'm weird); however, I wish you the best of luck. |

Thanks for the good wishes Ghandhi2, no offense that it's not to your taste...I checked out your reviews and saw that you also don't like Close to the Edge, so we're in good company!
