Topic: prog in the movies Posted: March 10 2004 at 07:43 |
Many rock musicions have appeared in movies,70,s british pop idol David Essex for example, took the lead role in two very good movies about the rise and fall of a rock singer,"That,ll Be The Day(along with Ringo Starr)and "Stardust",its sequal(he shows some decent acting skills) but what about prog musos(And before some of you cite Mick Fleetwood in "The Running Man"...i do not consider Fleetwood Mac "prog" )Also, i am not talking about "live At Pompeii" or stuff like that i am talking of mainstream movies!!

Dude, that new and interesting-looking movie "Big Fish," which I've seen advertised, appears to have lots of classic progressive rock (Yes, etc.) on its soundtrack. We'll have to check that one out!
Of course, mainstream musicians (Tina Turner, Bowie, Harry Connick, Dwight Yoakam, Ice Cube (or is it Ice "Tea?" Berg? Chips?) have more "name-brand" and face-recognition factor, and thus pull in the unwashed masses, more than say, Steve Howe could. I'm no movie expert, but I can't think of any movie with prog "stars" in them. Wait! Phil Collins in "Buster," I think it was?

PETER: yeah i was actually thinking of "Buster" when i posted the question(Phil Collins was originally an actor i beleive!!!) and thats a start!! you are right about the wider recognition of mainstream artists,i actually thought that any movies mentioned would be more likely from the 70,s I have heard(and i cannot confirm this at all!!) that Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull Has had a couple of small movie roles. As for Big Fish......I have just about lost interest in movies now(to much left wing B*&%%s**t) but i have heard snatches of the soundtrack in trailers...sounds good

Phil Collins was the original 'Artful Dodger' in the London production of 'Oliver' in the very early '60's, but if you go back even farther, he was a child model (one of the Genesis books I have has a print of him on the cover of a knitting pattern - how rock'n'roll is that!!)

'200 Motels' from Frank Zappa has Frank Zappa in it (and Ringo Starr)
'Baby Snakes' from Frank Zappa has Frank Zappa in it
Those ARE movies, and he IS a prog star

The MOODY BLUES "appeared" as themselves in an episode of THE SIMPSONS,would that count or am i breaking my own rules here Also, wasnt Roger Waters in the movie version of 'The Wall"?(it was a mainstream theatrical release!) i have not seen the movie so perhaps someone could confirm or deny that for me bands with the occasional "Proggish" dabble could include The Monkees in "HEAD" with "The Porpoise Song" ,Country Joe And The Fish in "Zacheriah" But i will admit, that is stretching it

And let's not forget Rick Wakeman as Thor in 'Liztomania'!
Also, in 'School of Rock', Jack Black gives the child keyboard player a Fragile CD and tells him to 'listen to the keyboard solo in Roundabout'. After that, the kid appears on stage... wearing a cape! Tell about bad influences in school
Regards:
Paco Fox, alive thanks to loosing by 5 minutes a train that later exploded. Today, I feel more alive than ever!.

Today some terrorists have put several bombs in Madrid's central station. Almost every train has to get through it. It seems the casualities have been enormous.
But I must say I'm happy, because I usually take the following train to the one that exploded, and nobody I know have miracleous been hurted!. Alive by 10 minutes!
Time to listen to some uplifting prog music to ease the tension. Maybe Wakeman will do. And if I listen to Merlin I may even laugh a bit!
Regards

Trying to 'hop" one?! What is that supposed to mean? Sounds like you were trying to jump on it. Or maybe you were holding on to it, while it was riding out of the station? In Holland, a few days ago, a boy got killed while doing that.

Whoooaaa Paco
I've just checked out MS News - at least 173 dead, being blamed on Basque seperatists (ETA??)
Don't know what to say - can't imagine how you must feel, having only just missed the train; who says there's no such thing as fate, eh?
Have a drink on me, buddy!!

Terrible! Cursed terrorists! Trying to revenge themselves by killing innocent people. Were there many casualties?
Edit: Sorry, posted that to late to read Jim Garten's post. That's just terrible, so many casualties. And a very scary idea that you could have been on that train, Paco Fox.

I thought that was bum?
I'd like to see an international force of SAS type guys that track 'em and take 'em out. We don't really need to know, do we?
I was in the military at the beginning of the Iran hostage thing in 1980. Breeds a certain rage within. Innocents shouldn't be involved.
