Make up a band with any musicians of your choice, preferably from the same era. The trick here is not to just choose a bunch of virtuosos, but musicians that would sound great and work together well. It dosen't have to be 100% prog. Then describe what the band would sound like.

Guitar: Syd Barrett
Guitar: Jimi Hendirx
Drums and Percussion: Robert Wyatt
Bass: Richard Sinclair
Keys: Dave Stewart

It would actually be likely for this band to exist, since all the musicians are connected somehow. Hendrix was close to The Soft Machine who were close to Floyd and the other Canterbury dudes. Very intresting combination of Barrett's space rock, Hendrix psychedelic blues, and Canterbury. But I could see it work. Barrett would lead the band and share singing roles with Wyatt and Sinclair. Hendirx would focus on guitar and being awesome.

Bass: Pete Travawas
Guitar: Steve Morse

That's cheating. Wink

Here's another one:

Les Claypool: Bass/ volcals
John Theodore: Drums
Steven Wilson: Guitar/vocals
Adrian Belew: Guitar/vocals

It would end up sounding like funk-prog-metal.

O RLY?Tongue

And to answer Mickey's question:

Vocals: Frank Zappa, Adrian Belew, Terry Bozzio
Guitars: Adrian Belew, Frank Zappa
Bass: Patrick O'Hearn
Drums: Terry Bozzio, Ed Mann (Percussion)
Keyboards: Tommy Mars, Peter Wolf

Oh, that line up has happened?Wink

Then maybe this:

Guitars: Alex Lifeson
Bass: Patrick O'Hearn
Drums: Terry Bozzio
Keyboards: Mark Kelly
Vocals: Fish

Who knows what this group would sound like? Obvious Zappa, Rush, and Marillion influences would be prevalent, as well as a strong rhythm unit in Bozzio and O'Hearn, who could provide a tight groove during a cool improv duel between Kelly and Lifeson. It would be very interesting to hear a group like this play, though.

Go further -- any successful band in any point of time, with the actual line-up. It's even easier...

P.S. I have nothing against your choice...
