   I just recently started getting into Genesis, and I have to say, they've peaked my interest. I've listened to the songs they have on the site, loved them all, especially "The Knife" and "Watcher of the Skies." Anybody have any recommendations for albums, live CDs, etc? Thanks in advance.

	Anything from Trespass to Wind & Wuthering really. Genesis Live is great, but their best albums are generally recognised to be Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and particularly Selling England by the Pound. 	Buy the box set Archives I that features the early Genesis at its best including The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Live and the Selling England By The Pound Tour from 1973 along lots of interesting tracks - see the reviews on this site!

	My personal Favorite is Foxtrot, which contains the essential track Supper's Ready Nursery Cryme is good as well, but slightly weaker, but contains some awesome tracks. The Lamb Lies Down...maybe be a little much for a beginner (IMO), so i recommend saving that one till you acquire more of a taste of Genesis (it worked for me at least). Selling England...is good, but ifeel its a little overrated. Although don't let that prevent you from buying it. It has many a classic track on it. Trespass is a little underrated, but again probably not best for beginners. Definitly start out somewhere in the Gabrial period. Although i think there best live album is Seconds Out (which is in the Hackett era).

	Don't forget the 'Three Sides Live' album - from the UK (EMI - Charisma), not from the US (Atlantic - ATCO). Because the fourth side is also live, and it includes one of the best live versions of 'Fountain of Salmacis,' originally from Nursery Cryme.

	Get Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme first, then continue with Selling England by the Pound and A Trick of The Tail. Then get either Trespass, Lamb Lies Down On Broadway or Wind & Wuthering. To finish, get Genesis Live and Seconds Out. I would also recommend Steve Hackett's "Voyage of the Acolyte" album, which is similar to Genesis' works. Edited by Bj-1 - May 22 2006 at 20:10

	Seconds Out is a fantastic live album, and probably better than Genesis live. In fact, if I could only have ONE Genesis album... I would probably choose Seconds Out... Its got a little bit of everything... a bunch of great Gabriel era songs... 'the lamb lies down' 'I know what I like' 'Suppers Ready' 'The Cinema Show' etc. Its got some great Collins era songs too... 'Dance on a Volcano' 'Los Endos' 'Afterglow' and 'Squonk'... oh I forgot firth of fifth too, and they do the outtro of 'The Musical Box' at the end of The lamb lies down... ah hell, I might as well list the last two as well... Carpet Crawlers and Robbery Assault and Battery... theyre all goddamn classics! I dont own many live albums, but this is my favourite out of all of them by far! If youre looking for studio albums then I would suggest Foxtrot and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway to start with... Foxtrot has Suppers Ready and... ah, all the other tracks on Foxtrot are really good... I think the weakest track is probably 'Get em out by friday' but thats just my opinion. The Lamb - I dont know, but to me this is an excellent starter album... a lot to 'sink your teeth in to'. Its got a long play time, which is always good with great albums like this, and you DONT have to listen to it all to 'get it', but that is still VERY enjoyable. I love popping in Disc one and just listening to a few songs, like In the Cage, Back in NYC, Counting Out time, Carpet crawlers, etc. Disc 2 has some classics as well... The Lamia... Slippermen... I love the Supernatural Anaesthetist, Riding the Scree, and 'The Waiting Room' is far better than people make it out to be... sure its basically just a noise instrumental, but when it gets into the music at the end... I like it. Anway... Those are my suggestions... Seconds Out - great selection of songs, great solos, Foxtrot - Its got freakin Supper's Ready on it! And Horizons (awesome). And Can Utility and the Coastliners (awesome). TLLDOB - songs ranging from great to absolutely excellent (second disc is, contrary to popular belief, not all filler, and has many a great track on it) Ok Im done

	I think "Trespass" is their best, "Nurse Cryme" and "Foxtrot" are good albums too!

	Avoid The Archive 1969 - 1975 -collection, because Gabriel has re-recorded his vocals on The Lamb Lies down on Broadway Live on Shrine Auditorium, LA, January 24th, 1975 afterwards. So it is not the actual recording that the band sounded, and after over 20 years his voice doesn´t sound anywhere near the Gabriel of 1975. "Then to cap it all Hackett jumped on the ´re-do it again´ bandwagon with several fresh attemps at perfection. His solo on "Windshield" is full of fine riffs and typical Hackett-sounding sustained notes. Trouble is, he did not play like that in 1975 and it sounds like it. Maybe Banks had some fun as well as some of the organ on "In the Cage" which sounds very un-Hammond like to these ears and has sample written all over it.", writes Paul Russell on his book GENESIS - play me my song. A live guide 1969 to 1975. So listen the original recordings starting from "Trespass" to "The Lamb Lies down on Broadway". Also try those many live bootlegs from that era. I personally found that The Rainbow Theatre October 20th 1973 is the best Genesis live gig so far that I have heard!

	I agree with Heino on The Rainbow Theatre gig; it's a shame they only used some parts of it for the Archive box set instead of releasing the whole concert... after you've digested all these Genesis albums try Anthony Phillips debut The Geese and the Ghost - if you like the pastoral, acoustic style of Trespass you'll fall in love with this one

	Trespass, Foxtrot, SEBTP, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are essential Nursery Cryme is too disorderly for me. If you like that, I suggest you pick up Genesis Archives which includes the Lamb live plus one cd of live material (Suppers Ready, Happy the Man, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, ect...) and the other cd contains rare demo material. An excellant buy for Genesis fans
