Topic: Why isn't TaaB #1 in the top 100 chart? Posted: April 23 2006 at 12:08 |
TaaB has 4.69 grade and is #6, whilst CTTE has 4.57 and is #1. Someone fix please?

It isn't just about the rating, the top 100 is based on some kind of complex algorithm that us mortals can't understand.

Yeah, if it were just about ratings, then the multitude of unknown
albums that have each received only one rating of 5 stars would take
over the top spot. The top 100 takes into account the average rating as
well as the number of ratings. There may be other factors, but I'm not
sure what they are.

Because the rankings are also based on the number of votes, so the albums with one five star vote aren't on top. And since CTTE has a lot more reviews than any other album on here, there is no way that it could not be number one. Even though every other album in the top 6 has a higher rating than it.

Pity...Thick as a Brick is a much better album than Close to the Edge. I don't even know what CTTE is doing in top 10...

It's really simple: The more reviews an album has, the more weight is given to it's average. The only complex thing about the formular is that a logarithmic function is used to limit this effect of the number of ratings.

It's in the top 10 because a lot of people think very highly of it.

Simple: The reason is because TaaB is only 1/6th as good as CTTE.

So your saying Suffocating the bloom is only 1/303 of CTTE?

It could be worth using a higher powered logarithm though... I don't
think 0.12 is really negligible in the context of a 5 star system. My
thinking is along the lines of log(log(ratings)). Mind you, you've
probably thought of all this a long time before me!

The only way to fix this problem is to get lots of your friends to register on this site and all give CTTE one star.
But if you do that, it *will* work.

No it won't ... as soon as it is dropping, some others come along and give it 5 stars until it is back up again.
Come on guys, get a life!

False. Because of the very high average rating CTTE now has, it would take 4-5 times as many 5-star reviews to counteract the 1-star reviews, because the 1-star reviews count for more. A good run of a few dozen 1's would sink CTTE for a good long time.

Don't underestimate the tenacity of the CttE fans!
Edit: And don't forget that they could simply submit a dozen 1 star ratings for TaaB!

Isn't the point of the review supposed to be so that others can find out about the music if they have never heard it? (not just systematicly trashing other albums to manipulate the top 100!)
