Topic: Dream Theater Reccomendations Posted: April 19 2006 at 00:17 |
Okay, I have downloaded a couple DTsongs and they haven't really grabbed me. I know that many bands, especially in the progressive genre, take getting used to, and sometimes you have to start listening to the right stuff to get into a band. If someone wanted to get into Yes, I wouldn't tell them to download Tales, because it would most likely turn them off with it's complexity. I'm hoping this is what happened with me and Dream Theater, because everyone seems to love them except me. They have a lot of albums, and it is a little intimidating. So where should I start, cause I am lost.

"Awake" is pretty good and "A Change of Seasons" is fun. If you are looking for the Dream Theater like sound without the vocals try Liquid Tension Experiment . The second album is probably the better of the two, but the first is album is damn good as well. Liquid Tension Experiment consists of John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Tony Levin, and Jordan Rudess. All members of the present day line up of Dream Theater less of course Tony Levin.

Images & Words and Scenes from a Memory are (IMHO) the best picks
Also Octavarium is a good showcase for their talents, containing heavy riffs (The Root of all Evil, These Walls, Panic Attack), slow melodic pieces (The answer lies within) as well as more complex efforts (the title track epic and Sacrificed Sons)

So, you would say Images and Words is probably the best starter?

It would be helpful if you told us which songs you downloaded, and which one you like best (or worst).

Yes. Start there and go in chronological order.

Perhaps it'd fall in more adequate levels to experience Awake, whilst
composing your prelude to appreciation. I had started to take Dream
Theater into highly revered affinity, within the album's content and I
don't think it'd be that bad of a start, since you seem to enjoy Tool
and Porcupine Tree (I apologize, should I be precocious as to imply
erroneous remarks), whereas Awake most probably bears DT's darkest
ambience (oftenly confused, many tend to yield such label onto Train of
Thought, though I believe that record detains a closer approach to
metal itself, than a virtuously knaved, sullen demeanour), in refined
awareness of qualitative structure, coherent with progressive essence,
yet including many accessive tracks, deprived of whichever complexity a
fan could surfeit of. Nevertheless, Images and Words wouldn't fall much
behind an impressive preface to addiction, in spite of whatever dislike
you'd encounter in primeval DT. I would have to agree with
MikeEnRegalia, also, since the band's work is perpetually dynamic as to
achieve starkly different sets, crafted along with its stable,
conspicuous identidy, opposed to some statements, bedecking forums with
hatred (or simply divergent opinions). Even better to help others help
you, you could come to express your preference, in specific terms, so
as to correlate them to DT.

Scenes from a memory and Images and words are the best one to start.
One important note:
Scenes from a memory is the ultimate prog converter. All of my friends
that listen to prog started by me giving them SFAM (and i still do. one
by one. they drop like flies hehehehe) It also was my first prog
album.

Well, I downloaded Images and Words, and I can't get into that. Too upbeat, and too muc of that 80s like scream. So, I decided one more try, and downloaded Scenes From a Memory. One word: Amazing. I love this album. Awesome musicanship, plus I love concept albums.
Also, I only download when I am not sure I won;t like something. I will most deifnatly be buying some Dream Theater CDs.

I rate Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence as one of their best. It's the album I got first, by the way...
But I must confess, nowadays, I rarely listen to them

I guess SDOIT would be the next step. If you couldn't get into I&W I don't think that for example Awake, Falling Into Infinity & A Change of Seasons will be the best albums you'll ever hear
Well, I'm curious what you're next step will be. And face it, in about 2 years you'll have all cd's by this band, as I had the same feeling in the beginning

If Images and Words was too upbeat and 80s sounding for you, go with Awake or Scenes from a Memory.
